Red face rumble in the front-end

I have a 2001 Ranger Edge 4.0l V6 with a low, pulsing rumble that i hear coming from the front-end at between 15 and 35 mph. I've checked the front end and nothing seems out of the ordinary. I don't feel anything in the steering or the truck itself. I just hear it. Tires are wearing fine. I was told by a mechanic that there are certain noises that go hand-in-hand with owning a ford, such as the "clunk" when the trans. goes from reverse to drive. Any truth to this? I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to pre-computer cars and trucks, but i want to get an opinion on this so i don't look like an idiot if i take it to another mechanic and tell him about "ford noises."

Thanks!

Remove front tire and visually check brake pads. Turn rotors and check for the noise.
