Looking for a 4cyl turbocharged diesel where to find???
I am looking for a small (4cyl) turbocharged diesel. Somewhere around 3-4 liters.
This will be used in an automotive application.
Preferably a Cummins, or Cat, but all please suggest all ideas. I would like a used engine and not sure what to look in as far as vehicles go.
Thanks

Most Japanese manufacturers (Mitsu, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda) make a 4 cylinder diesel around the 3l mark, but I don't think many, if any of these are available in the states, you could try importing them however.
I think Mercedes imports its 270cdi, that may be worth a shot.
Or seeing you are on a Ford site, try this International engine...

I am going to be building a rockcrawler out of an explorer this winter and would like to use a 4cyl turbo diesel. If I can't find one cheap enough or at all it will get the good old F.I. 5.0L

I would not know what to put behind the MB diesel since it is 4x4 it will need a tranny that will work with a transfer case.

The 3.9 Cummins was also used commonly in cargo vans (such as Frito Lays trucks), as well as some farm machinery. I am pretty sure that the NV-4500 5-speed will bolt up to any 3.9.
www.fordcummins.com and www.turbodieselregister.com are both good places to get some information about Cummins conversions. The TDR forums have a section on Cummins conversions and a number of people have information and pictures of 3.9 conversions
My friend is installing a 3.9 into his GMC 1/2 ton pickup. I am curious to see how it turns out.

I have owned many older mercedes with Diesels & those motors are known for longevity. although they made 4 cyl that are out of 240D's they arnt turbo. if you want a Turbo Diesel Mercedes engine they are 5 Cyl 300D's (which are 3.0 liter) they where made in S-Class benzs from 1978 on ,or in the regular E-Class models from 1982 on & in the station wagens from 1981 on..
Your best luck to find one would be to buy a rusted out one that still runs for under $1k or if money is no object buy a nice Benz for about $3k or less. I used to sell motors for these for about $600 to people but I got out of dealing with these parts so i dont have any left. My suggestion is that you buy a complete car because then you get the tranny too & you can hear the thing run & make sure its good. BTW not much electrical to deal with at all so it should be easy in that respect. Ive heard of many people putting Mercedes Diesel engines in International Scouts i guess its a fairly easy conversion.
