Mileage w/ Superchip or Hypertech

My dad has a '98 psd w/ 111k on it and wants to get a little better mileage out of it. Right now he's getting about 17 mpg. First of all, would it be safe for him to get the programmer and secondly, if he gets it will his mileage go up? I've heard anywhere's of 2 even upwards of 6 mpg after the swapp. ( yet I find the latter hard to belive ). Thanks.. Any experiances would be helpful in the decision..

When I tried the SCMT, I got about 1.5-2mpg improvement in the High-Perf setting. Since I didn't have guages, I didn't test that setting very hard. Since most of the truck's work is towing, I used the Tow-Safe setting a lot, found it to be very beneficial for performance, but not much for mileage improvement. Overall, I liked the extra power found in the lower settings. Best mileage was found in HP setting (in agreement with the SuperChips techs) unloaded & cruising about 2200rpm (65mph). If your dad doesn't install guages, he should stick to the lower two settings. I know of others w/ guages that tow all kinds of loads in HP setting, which is NOT advised by factory. The cheapest way to improve mileage is to keep oil level up, tire pressure correct & leave the lead foot at home.
