I might as well make today productive as most of Ft. Rucker is shut down and there is nothing to do today. I was coming to work and my oldest son asked me to burn out while I was pulling out of the driveway. Bless his heart I can't get any rubber but something I did notice was that when I gave her the gas, it felt like the motor was holding back. Is that the timing being retarded or advanced too much?
Either condition could do it. Pull the vacuum to the distributor, plug it, and set the timing to 10 degrees BTDC, 12 if you're feeling ambitious. Plug it back in and tell us what happens.
Well, today I went out trying to find the cause of some knocking and ended up taking a really hard look at my harmonic balancer (Freightrain told me to do something involving it) and I noticed the timing marks. Wouldn't you know it but I had it set for 8 degrees AFTER TDC. I assumed that to the left of TDC would before TDC. NOT so for anybody reading this, it's to the right. She runs like a scalded dog. And the smoke I've been complaining about and almost about to spend $$$ on heads has practically gone away. Stands to reason, now she's buring all the gas. I shudder to think of how many gallons of $1.70/gallon unleaded I've wasted. We'll see how the smoking is after she cools down. Thanks Larry and Rusty.
She still smokes but not as much as I do or as much as she used to. I think I'll put off getting the heads reworked for a bit. Anyway, I'm shickled titless.
What oil are you running? Usually something a little thicker, like a 15w40, will really cut down on smoke. Give it a try. I'm glad you got the timing figured out!

I've been running the manual's recommended 5w30. I'll try 15w40, couldn't hurt.
