3.8 V6 water pump removal?

I know this is not the right fourm but I didn`t get much help from them so I`ll ask this great buch this question,my mothers 1990 cougar water pump went bad and I`m changing it so I need to get the power steerin pump pulley off and am not sure how to get the pulley off to get to the bracket that is holding the water pump on,how does the pulley come off the power stering pump?thanks for your help.

Borrow the power steering pulley gear puller (a standard loaner tool) from Autozone. After you are done, you can return it for a full refund.

thanks,does the little allan bolt in the middle of the pulley come out to remove the pulley?

No. Don't worry about the allen screw. You'll see how the puller works when you get it.

If memory serves me correctly, the only thing that was a PIA was the little key that kept moving around when reinstalling the pulley.......

There is no Allen bolt on the shaft of the pump. It's just a simple press-fit. Do not use the 3-jaw or 2-jaw gear puller on this one. You need the real steering pump pulley puller.

Cook, how are you? There is no key on the steering pump shaft. Is the key you are talking about on the engine crankshaft? I forgot too! Old age does that to you

I just did mine. It's a simple press fit, no key. Mine was very tight though and took some serious wrenching on the tool to get the pulley off and on again..

thanks everyone I got it off with the puller that I got on loan from the parts store and everything is back together and running.
