After warm-up, mine rests well below the mid-point and a little above the "C". This is true on Zero F deg. days as well as summer time with the A/C on. I bought the 88 Aerostar 3.0L new, but for the life of me, can't remember how it was the first 50,000 miles. It now has 65k and I'm wondering if the thermostat is stuck open after reading all the posts about bad thermostats. The owners manual and factory shop manual are both very vague on the subject. The engine seems very happy and idles and runs very smoothly but seems to warm up a bit slower in the winter.
If the thermostat is stuck open, then you'll experience a very long warm up period. This is annoying especially in winter. I've had that problem on all cars I've owned except the Aerostar. I will change mine too (engine getting warmer than usual). I suggest you change yours preventively, it's never wrong to do that and the part is usually not very expensive. However, I don't know how hard it is to change it.

When my original thermostat gave out early on, I replaced it with a "colder" version. I was towing a horse trailer then and thought this would help, especially in the summer. The gauge is now constantly just above the cold zone by 1 or 2 notches - summer or winter. (I keep intending to replace it but the engine seems happy to operate at this range.) Your thermostat may also be a "cold" replacement or the wrong replacement from an earlier effort.

I'm just going pick one up at the parts store and replace it since this seems to be part that fails on the Aerostars frequently. I've had to replace a few on other vehicles I've owned over the years, so it's no real surprise it would fail after 13 yrs.
