my 1986 f150 351w runs hot while i am pulling a 5000 lb camper but does
not run hot without the camper . the temp gauge is pointing to the L in the
word normal on the gauge .
when driving without the camper the gauge points around the N in the
word normal . i was wondering if the fan clutch might be bad because after
driving the fan spins fairly easy by hand.
Well, sounds like you already proved the fan clutch is bad so I would start there. Unfortunately, when engines run hot under load, it is often a minor small head gasket leak. Are you sure it doesn't run hot when climbing hills and accelerating towards highway speeds.
Anyway, I would change the fan clutch or get electric fans to start.
I'd do a radiator flush / coolant change before suspecting a head gasket.
Also change the thermostat as part of the flush.
After unplugging radiator, don't be suprised to find radiator leaks.
I've been through this on 2 ford trucks and several other vehicles.
Coolant should be changed at least 1 a year on older vehicles. Some new vehicles are designed to go longer.
i was looking at the engine tonight and noticed what appears to be rust on the heads
near the spark plugs.
the rust is on one head only, if it is a head gasket leak should i do both heads or just
one?
if your going through all the trouble to get to the heads you whould do both of them, if your engine has alot of miles it would be wise the have a machine shop check them for cracks, i just fixed this problem on a friends f250. If your heads are ok have a valve job done and resurface them.
it is a rebuilt engine i got from napa it has 8000 miles on it.
i'm going to have a pressure test done on the coolant system because i have noticed
i am losing antifreeze.
