Don't know if any of you are aware, but the forecast track for Ivan goes thru a good part of Georgia.

Although there's a lot of uncertainty as to where it will actually go, here are current predictions:
-Cat 3 storm (111-131 mph winds) at the Alabama state line, AFTER it crosses the FL panhandle.
-Doesn't downgrade to a tropical storm (winds less than 74 mph) until Atlanta.

Ivan's track looks a lot like that of Camille (1969), which was the second most powerful storm to hit the US - stronger than Andrew.

So keep an eye on it & batten down the hatches (or at least bring that sofa in off the porch!). I'm trying to get my ornery generator to crank!

For the climatically inclined, I'm getting the track using JStorm, a freeware program that uses FTP data from the National Hurricane Center.

OOps.. It's actually called jstrack. The link is www.purl.org/net/jstrack.

You'll have to look carefully for the Windows version (if you're using Windows).

I had to do several FTP updates before the update processed completely; maybe the server timed out. But after that, I get a "Finished" message that says it's clsoing the FTP connection. Once you make a change, change the map to get it to update. I also has issues with saving the config, so I just renamed the file that was making the app crash.

That said, I don't think I've ever seen a niftier freeware app. It plots wind radii, strike probabilities and the track. Choose the option to install the historical file- that's how I compared it to Camille (and Andrew, and the Great FL 'Cane of 1935). I hope this makes sense. If not, message me in the morning.

Now if I can find either a new carb or a carb kit for my generator, which is in pieces in the garage. I thought I had let it run dry, but apparently only drained the tank...didn't take long to figure out why the bowl wasn't refilling! Ugh!

 

You can also enable the mouse pointer to give latitude & longitude. Since the track map doesn't show features, you can calculate the distance between two points here: http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~cvm/latlongdist.html

Likes BBQ, knows morse code, can tear down and rebuild carbs, can totally re-work the electrical system in a vehicle, is computer literate, can trouble shoot error codes from the blinky lights on the dash, obviously not afraid to get her hands dirty.....can you weld to?

Well, gee...I'm not all THAT!
I don't weld but I've always wanted to learn - but I have waaaaay too much stuff going on as it is.

BTW (I should have known this), if it has to do with a generator, there ain't NO parts for NObody NOwhere! I don't think it'll work, but I can always hope. I'd settle for it not leaking gas in my overstuffed garage.

 

Liz what kind of motor is on it? There's a place in Fayetteville that may be able to help with parts and stuff. I'll need to ask my dad but there's also a place in Stockbridge we buy parts from every now and again.

I'm quite stunned- One minor leak, but it ran! The idle goes up and down. I guess that's the inlet valve sticking closed, (idle down) then the float finally pulling it open (idle up). I was afraid to clean the needle valve too much - couldn't tell where the valve stopped & the Viton seal began.

The carb is a Walbro LMT 116 that goes on a Briggs 19E412 (10 HP), running a 5000W Coleman. The Briggs pn for the kit is 497849 (carb manuf. in Feb 1996). Finding a kit will be a matter of happening on someone who has one in stock. The distributor (Sedco?) is out & backordered on anything generator-related.

im surprised that you havent been able to find parts for it, its a briggs after all.
is it a flattie motor? those are very common, even the the newer ohv model is been around long enough to be fairly common. i work on them a good bit, maybe i could help. but try not to look at generator related stuff. look for the part in general. they shouldve used that same carb on most of the 10hp models. there are some real good small engine shops along buford hwy in duluth such as Howard Bros. and Stovall. ive gotten rare parts there all the time. good luck

Great info Big Blue...I forgot about Howards and Stovall. Liz one of those two should have that part.

Now if I could just find the oil leak on my PSD I'd be a happy camper!
