Question Are Performance chips real?

I was looking on ebay and saw performance chips for gas engines. It said they fool the computer into thinking the engine is working hard. Is this true and if so does it make it do it all the time and kill the ole gas mileage?

I have heard good and bad things about these Gimmicks, depending on which one it is I would not buy one personally unless it was made by a well known company. It may cost me $200- $400 but I would prefer that to having to replace the computer in my truck.

If you are talking about those $30 performance chips on Ebay, don't go there. If you are talking a Jet Module or a Hypertech programmer, don't go there unless you run around all the time at wide open throttle (because that is the only time their tuning is applied to your computer). If you are talking a high end tuner like the Superchips 1715 or a Diablo chip, then the answer is goforit! These tuners do not fool the computer into thinking anything, they reprogram the performance curves to maximize what your vehicle is actually capable of. For a unit that is designed and tuned properly, you are going to shell out some $$$$.
I have the Superchips 1715 and love it, see the Chips forum for more detail.

I am VERY pleased with the results, worth every penny in my book. I purchased a JET Performance module a long while ago, before I found this forum. After learning more about chips and programmers I junked the JET ($300 lesson learned) and got the 1715. I think you will not be disappointed, but be careful about your mods before buying a 1715. If you have long tube headers or an aftermarket cam you will have to go with a custom Diablo.

Personally i feel a chip is best spent after you have done all the mods to your motor first. like headers, exhaust, cam, intake , throttlebody. this will allow you to truely get the most out of that chip.
