I knew that they switched to liquid cooled, but I thought I was sure that the original Bell helicopter engine they started with was a 500 something cubic inch six.

Caddilac made a concept car that has a V-16 which is essentially two 350's put together. They did that to tribute the V-16 cars they had in the 30's. Apparently Al Capone had an armoured version of the originnal caddy V-16

I had a '71 Fleetwood with a 472cu in. engine. I'm pretty sure the El Dorados that year had a 500cu in. one.

The 500ci caddy motor was an option in most of the line in the early 70s, they were huge, but didn;t produce a lot of horsepower.

Yeah I saw the show w/ Lenos car in it . Wasn't it a helicoptor engine or something? It was really cool to see the car being rocked (torqued) by the motor at the slightest blip of the throttle. Me want.

That huge diesel is pretty cool, but I wanna see the turbo system that feeds it!

Out in my garage is a 526 cid v8 out of a 78 ElDorado. Got the whole car for free, and like a fool, pitched the Turbo 400 tranny before I knew what it was.

the 500ci produced 400hp, 525 lb-ft tq when it first came out, after 73 they only produced around 350hp because of the gas crunch

i've got a 72 caddy with 500ci bored and stroked out to 539ci with a roots blower and it produces 1200hp

I wish I somehow still had that Caddy. It was huge beyond belief and I don't see them around anymore. Maybe someday I'll find another, it's gotta be a Fleetwood though.

This isn't exactly an automotive type engine, but I came from the tractor pulls tonight and there were two modified class rigs that had these engines, one had 2 the other had 3.....aircraft restorers would pay big bucks for these in running order, I wonder where they get em! Still 3 of em should make a healthy 3900 horses, I'd like that under the hood of my truck! There were also some turbine powered modified rigs- those are just cool!

Wow, I wasn't sure anyone could still find those. Their use in unlimited hydroplanes and air racing sort of used up the surplus supply. I believe the Rolls-Royce Merlin, seen in the P51 Mustang and the Spitfire, was a bit more efficient. Most of them were built by Packard, paying a royalty to Rolls-Royce for every one used in our planes, and they made the P51 a very efficient fighter -- both in terms of cost and its capabilities. These engines in their modified forms in hydroplanes and unlimited air racers, produced twice the horsepower they had in WWII. But that makes for a short service life. Unless we have the financial resources of Jay Leno, I don't think you and I will have any such. But it sure is fun to dream of a 27 liter V12 under the hood!

Here, take a look: http://www.spitfireart.com/html/merlin_engines.html

The Caterpillar 797 uses two diesel engines driving generator(s), which in turn operate DC motors on the wheels. The rated capacity of these mining trucks is 360 tons; they are used in the tar sands area around Ft. McMurray Alberta.
