460 swap info

I posted this in engine swap but have had no responce.

I have a 1978 F250 4x4 reg cab. The f250 has a 400 block. I plan to put this 400 block in a 79 f250 extended cab 4x4 for a daily user. The 78 F250 I plan to put a 460 that was originally from a F250 4x2 into the 78 4x4. I really hate to buy all the hardware from a aftermarket but I know that is not possible. I will need to but motor mounts or motor towers, which to go with I am not sure. I also heard a 390 rear sump oil pan will fit the 460 or a front sump 360 turned around will fit. What kinda pickup tube will I need to go with? Will a pickup tube from a mid 80 460 4x4 work with the 79 460? Will I also need to change the dip stick? The truck has a manual tranny so what flywheels will work with this setup? ALso which clutch set will work? With a different flywheel will I need a different starter? Thanks for the info.

Do you still have the 2wd that the engine came out of? You may be able to use the ones in the 2wd. The 400 flywheel will fit but will through the motor out of balance. It has been a while since I researched this and can't remember where I got all of my info.

Mositso - as far as the oil pan question, I put an '83 Econoline Van (460, natch) pan into my truck - works like a charm (rear sump and the drain hole is at the right place...).

I also use the same dipstick designed for this pan - it screws into the pan and attaches to one of your header bolts for additional support....

I hope this helps...

I put a 460 in my '78 f-150 4x4. Motor mounts are the same on the 1/2 and 3/4 tons so this should work. I used 360/390 motor mounts. Only two of the three holes on these line up with the holes in the 460 but it works well and is strong. On the towers, I cut out the tower face and used about 5/16" steel plate to make new tower faces. I then notched them similar to the 400 towers but about 3/4" forward of the old notches since that is where the stud on the engine mounts hit. I then bolted the new towers to the mounts and lowered the engine down so it sits correctly in the frame. I then tack welded the new faces to the tower and raised the engine until the rubber mounts were not touching the tower and welded them the rest of the way. This requires minor fabrication and welding but beats shelling out the cash for LandL mounts.

What year is the motor? If it is a '79 or later you must use a flywheel for an externally balanced motor. The pre '79's were internally balanced so you must use an internally balanced flywheel. THE 400 FLYWHEEL WILL NOT WORK. The crank bolt patterns are DIFFERENT. However, the 400 clutch and pressure plate will work. If the motor is internally balanced, a 360/390 flywheel will work although you will need to use the pressure plate for this flywheel. Your 400 starter should work.
The 360/390 oil pan will NOT work with a 460, they are entirely different. The 2wd oil pan from a 460 will work if your truck has at least a 2" suspension lift. If there is not a lift, the 2wd oil pan (front sump) will hit the front differential when the suspension compresses, I know, I made this mistake. Otherwise, a van or 4wd(rear sump) will have to be used. Use a dipstick for the correct pan.
The accessories from the 2wd 460 will more than likely work in your 78. I only had clearance problems with the A/C compressor hitting my fan shroud. I just removed the compressor until I can find a shorter one.

Still looking for flywheel

First I like to thank you all for the information it has been plenty helpfull. I did a little researching about the Flywheel. My 460 is a 79 model. Which makes it an externally balanced engine. Now I am looking for an enternally balanced 460 manual flywheel. Is the D9tz Flywheel Balanced the same as an E5TZ flywheel. In other words can I use a 83 460 flywheel on my 79 460. I heard something about the 79 flywheel being 28oz balance and the 83 flywheel being 50oz balance. I unfortunatly bought a 390 flywheel before I thought about if my engine is internally or externally balance so now I have a 390 flywheel that i cant use. Bummer.
