i own a 90 f-150 with 300-6, 138,xxx miles. It seems to have some sort of knock /ping from the lower end, sometimes its bad sometimes not there, oil pressure reads normal, i run 10w40 with can of oil treatment every oil change all year round, not leaking any. Buddy said i might need to advance or retard my timing to possibly get rid of it??? Cant be main bearing can it, maybe i need to replace oil pump, oil pump screen, run tranny fluid in oil to clean ports in head??? Truck will not do it early in the morning, usually when warm and at idle, when in drive you can barely hear it.
Maybe a valve ping??? Your main bearings should not be wore out at 138000 miles. I have never heard of advancing or retarding the timing to get rid of a knock though but i reckon you could try it it isn't hard to do and if you acvance it it may give a little better performance.
Might be a little carbon build up, or some cruddy gas. You could try pulling the timining back a couple of degrees, but a much simpler method, yet more costly, is to run a little higher octane gas and see if that low-mid range ping persists. Is it a knock or a ping? Ping sounds like valve clatter, knock is much lower in frequency and period. Lifter noise is normal after a few miles, sounds like ice cubes rumbling over the cam.
sounds like a knock. When i do oil changes and dump the oil in and start it, for about 2 seconds you can tell the oil hasnt made it to the bottom end and can hear it knock, the sound i hear sounds less frequent and not consistent as a motor knock does, i tried running higher octane fuel, dont think it helps much but any other cheap ideas would be good thanks!
