I have a '91 A* XLT E4WD and recently had the E4WD light come on at highway speed. It blinks 9 times. Can anybody tell what this code is.
Also can anybody recommend a good manual. Haynes seem to be the only manuals available where I am and they don't cover the 4WD models.
The E4WD light blinked nine times, paused and then repeated. It did this for the remainder of the trip,(aprx. 20 minutes.) Subsequent trips around town, short low speed, did not result in flashing indicator.
Yep ,,,,,
My 94 Aerostar AWD did this today ..Blinks 9 times...
Clunking sound both rear and right front. Then the rear antilock came on!
The check engine also ..Left the aerostar at my daughters student lot..
Going to my manual...
Will update....

Check to make sure the rear brake lights are still working. I once had the lights from the RABS and E4WD come on at the same time, and the torque converter would not lock at freeway speeds, and the crusie control stopped working, all at the same time. The problems were all traced to the brake light bulb filaments burning out.
My brake lights work, but my cruise doesn't work. Apparently the cruise hasn't worked since the previous owner got it. I'm not terribly concerned about the cruise but If it is symptomatic of some other problem I guess I should fix it
Hi all
returned to campus and took my 94 awd to a local shop in Plymouth..turn igition on no blinking lights ...but as soon as i turned the wheel sharply ..Wicked shudder ...Ont he lift it was not CV right side ...yippee.. but the right wheel was real shaky why.. Lower ball joint tie rod upper ball joint..yes and no .. Joe the MNechanic says upper control arm loose.. the rubber inserts look real worn..
Going to the archives and the manual..
Will update

There was just a post on Upper controlarm bushings. They said they looked good but were bad. Also the Upper ball joint is a known weak spot on Aerostars.
I've had the same problem with my 93 AWD aerostar. Your problem is related to the speed sensors on the transfer case. They are magnetic pickups mounted near the output shafts on the transfer case. These sensors help to control the clutches in the transfer case to send more/less power to the front or rear wheels. If the computer is faulting these sensors, you will get the 4X4 light flashing 9 times, and can also cause the harsh shudder while turning. Mine did this so bad, that it cracked the mount for the front differential. Remove the two sensors on the transfer case, and check the connectors for oil and make sure that they are making good connections. Also, check the main disconnect for the transfer case for anything abnormal. If this doesn't fix your problem, you may need to replace them. (around $90 each)
Local neighbor and master mechanic said let's take it for a test drive..
Backed out of the driveway ..no problem..turning the wheel ..no problem..
BUT as soon as the VAN started going forward and turning at the smae time
came this wicked shudder real bad!! I told mike if I made a wide turn it wouldnt happen.. so he told me to drive it like a semi.. Driving straight smooth as silk.. sharp turn ssssshuuuuuddddderrrrr. Now comes the crazy part Mike finds a side street and guns the van in reverse with a ssharp
backward turn.. Now after that no problem in making sharp forward turns ..What happened? Did the sensors get reset? Did going in reverse sharply
shake up a bad connection?.How do these two sensors work?
ON the road again
The saga continues........................
Shudder returns when turning..One reply was right on the mark..It has to do with the electric clutch for the front wheel drive .. It is not disengaging during the turns causing the binding condition. Unplug the control module thisis under the drivers seat. Presto no more binding in turns but no all wheel drive.. thats ok for now! Problem then is the wiring, connections and the speed sensors themselves...To be continued
Hi All,
Right now my 94 AWD is a two wheel drive. Under the driver's seat is the control module for the AWD .. I have removed it so I could use the van..
The code nine times means mechanical problem that allows clutch plates to slip during clutch engagement (OR FAULTY SENSOR OUTPUT SIGNAL)!!!!
Diagnosis and testing.. Transfer case clutch diagnosis...or
Transfer case speed sensors
My case it may be dirty connections on the two speed sensors or bad sensors themsevles...
Suggestion are first to clean connectors then change the front sensor then
the rear sensor...
Sarkis,
The sensors themselves are just magnets. As such, they do not wear out or go bad. If they accumulate a lot of metallic particles that happen to be suspended in the lubricating fluid, they can give false signals. Don't buy new ones until you pull the old ones and see if they are festooned with metallic particles. If so, you may have a more serious problem from excessive wear from the transfer case, transmission or rear differential - all have these sensors that must work in concert with each other. The good news: it is rare to find the sensors covered in particles. A wiring or connection problem is more likely the cause of the problem.
Sarkis,
The biggest problem that I have had with mine is oil accumlation in the sensor connections themselves. Make sure that check both sensors, and I would remove them as aerocolorado suggested (they're easier to clean that way). If this doesn't fix the problem, I would get a schematic and check the copperpaths between the module and the transfer case. If all is good there, you might look at replacing the sensors. I have had a sensor go bad before. If this doesn't fix your problem, It could be internal to the transfer case. I experience the intermittent blinking problem that you present from time to time, but usually goes away after cleaning the sensor connectors.
