My 2000 Expy (31,000 miles 5.4L EB 4x2 275/60R17 w/towing package) gets, according to the on-board trip computer: 13.5 around town (congested urban South Florida), 19.5 mpg cruising along at 50-55 mph, and the mileage drops with amazing predictability and consistency to 18 mpg cruising at 65 mph, and then to 16.5 at 75 mph. Of course, this is for nice, warm and moist sub-tropical summer weather with the Auto A/C always cranking.

I have a 97 XLT 5.4 with the tow package 3.73 gears 4X4. After checking it for 17819 miles under all condentions my average MPG is 13.623. I have seen it as low as 7 mpg (when I tow my 65 Buick Wildcat behind it) and as high as 16.47. Take it for what its worth. I love the power it has and would not get rid of it unless I was getting a newer one. I bought mine Nov of 1996 loved it since. We also had a Explorer and it had nothing but problems.

I have a 03 FX4 with the 5.4 and 3.73 gears, mileage around 17,500. According to the on-board trip computer, consistantly get 13/14 mpg driving around town and as much as 19/20 mpg on the Interstate in typical driving conditions with the cruise control activated. I recently drove from Richmond VA. to St. Louis MO which is approximatley 800 miles (right over the Blue Ridge and Alleghany Mts.) all Interstate, over the course of which I averaged 20 mpg.

We have a 97 Expedition XLT with leather, 4x4, rear air, 5.4L, HD Tow Package, 3.73 rear gears...so you get a feel of the weight.
It has aftermarket headers, aftermarket exhaust, and a k&n cone filter.
The best we ever got was 18MPG. We average 14-15MPG. The lowest we have gotten was 12 after doing some off roading. If you consider how big the Expedition is and the large 5.4L V8, 18MPG is excellent. Our new Taurus SHO with the 3.4L 32 Valve V8 has gotten as low as 19MPG and it only weighs 3400 pounds.

2000 5.4 EB gas mileage
I'll add another data point:
2000 5.4 liter EB 4x4, with 3.73 rear end, air suspension, tow package, skid plate option, sun-roof (so about as heavy as an Expy gets):
driving around town (fairly hilly SF Bay Area) 12.5 - 13
steady freeway driving at 70-75 mph - 16.5 - 17 mpg - very repeatable
(gets better if I'm only doing a steady 60-65)
round-trip from SF Bay area (sea level) to Lake Tahoe (almost 7000 feet) and back (so, long up-hill, followed by long down-hill) - 16 mpg
For reference, the EPA rating for this year/model was 12 city, 16 highway
Not too bad, especially since it only takes regular gas. From a cost perspective, the ability to use regular instead of premium translates to almost 2 mpg.
