You have a point...what you could do is print off the page...take it to your local shop and see how close they could get to matching it. World heads aren't that expensive. Who knows? You can't go wrong, measure from the base of one vavle cover to the other and its 11", I measured the distance on mine before I posted it. later

Well the problem with measuring is there are so many things in the way of getting the tape measure in there....i'm gonna see if i can find a pic of a 351 intake. Thanks.

Good idea about the printout too.

Justin, I have a 351 intake from an 88 F250, and I'll try to get a picture of it this weekend.

I was bored and made a graphic of suggestions to tell the difference between the blocks but it won't show up.

You could take a piece of wire or clothes hanger and bend it into a blocked U shape that measures 11" (351w), that might help avoid obstacles like distributor/wires/intake, so you could measure between the intakes, wouldn't hurt to measure the gap of the wire each time just in case it gets bent?

Also, take a look at your distributor, then look under it at the base where you tighten the hold down bolt, you will notice that the distributor sits on a round pedastel that is cast into the block, and the distributor base (where the hold down bolt is located) is flush with the underneath of the lower intake. The 351w distributor base sits almost 1.5" (roughly) below the lower intake bottom and you will notice that the cast pedastel that your 302 distributor sits on, isn't present on the 351w block. later

Justin a really easy way to tell if it's a 302 or 351 is to look at the thermostat housing. If you can get a socket on the lower bolt it's a 351, if you need a wrench it's a 302.

Well fella after fighting with the gallery for the past few days I finally managed to get this graphic to work. Appears they are redoing the gallery or something. I hope you can make it out, after resizing and rewording and redesinging the picture, trying to get everything to fit, it came out looking like crap. Maybe these two differences, which I couldn't put into words effectively, will help you identify the 302 from a 351w along with the other differences pointed out by fellow users. later

Hey Justin, I'm in the process of uploading some pictures of the two intake manifolds now if you want to check them out. That'll be just another way you can use to tell the motors apart.

You would need to use a reduced base circle camshaft and drill & tap the block for the spider retainer bolts.

You could run a standard roller camshaft and use aftermarket linked roller lifters, more expensive but a lot stronger than the oem design.

Or look for a block with F4TE as part of the casting number.

I havn't gone to another junkyard yet, I've gone to 2 and only found that carbed 351 but a couple of 302s. How would you suggest I get a flywheel and damper for it...just buy them somewhere?

Where would be best....local parts store or mail order?

I just got off the phone with Mustangs Unlimited....picked up a 5.0 Mustang mag and found a 5.8 392 stroker short block for $2895. Has hyper pistons, cast crank, 4.030" pistons, and he said he does have it available....this might be something I am going to get....whatcha think JW (or anyone else)?

Either would work, you might even spend the extra and get ford oem parts if available, if not then the local parts store should be fine. I don't think aftermarket would be necassary, your not looking to rev the snot out of it. I don't think you would go wrong either way.

Stock block or aftermarket for $2895?

PAW has the deal (probably already mentioned) 427 for $2995 that includes the heads, the kit is balanced but unassembled. For $175 more they will sleeve each bore to standard bore size. A sleeved bore is a lot stronger than stock. Just a thought
