If PS fluid is repackaged ATF, it's usually sold at much higher prices. So it doesn't make economic sense to use it in your transmission.

I've found that my power steering pump runs quieter with type-F ATF than Mercon. I used the cheap type-F once to flush out my PS system when I noticed the fluid turned milky. I was surprised to notice that it lost its characteristic whine as I was turning the gear to its limits to flush out the system.

just to clarify, I said that TRANSMISSION FLUID can be used in the power steering pump, but I did not say that POWER STEERING FLUID can be used in the automatic transmission.

What is the difference in,Dextron III, and Mercon V ? I bought III, and saw in the owners manual that it calls for Mercon V, I plan on a flush with the discharge line off after I change the filter.

Thanks, Bill ...>>>>>>>>"edited"...Found the info I needed, took the Dex III back, gonna go with the Merc V.

My 1996 Aerostar AWD with 51k, has not made any noise, as do all the other Aerostars with over 100k do.

Could simply be a matter of aging.

Additive packages.

I agree, I too would use it as a flush and put Mercon 5 or a fully Synthetic ATF made for your vehicle.
