I (they) just figured out what my thud noise was from under my truck and it is a lower ball joint passenger side.I will have all 4 replaced .How much should this cost and what else should I have done when it is torn down that far? f-350 srw 4x4 71,000 miles, every thing is original, shocks ,stabilizer
thanks in advance Ron

to have a shop do the work it will probably cost you about 1000. thats a high number may more likely be 8 to 900. if you do it yourself i think the ball joints may run you 400. i am a mechanic so i know the how to side not so much the how much side but i think these nembers are pretty close. the axle shafts will be out to do the work so the u-joints on the axle shafts should be looked at very closely. look for rust bleed and tightness or looseness. if the joint has rust bleed replace it also if there is a tight spot or any looseness. other than that check the tie rod ends and wheel bearings.

hey ken i really hope your kidding about the whole front end. but if your not i have a 95 f-250 that i would love you to finance the straight axle conversion. since you seem to have plenty of money lying around.

Smile Ball Joints

Ron,

I was quoted $750 to replace the uppers and lowers on my 99 F-350 SRW 4X4. I checked parts prices and total cost for seals and b-joints is about $250 from NAPA or Ford. Ball joints from Autozone are cheaper but not sure about the quality of McQuay Norris as opposed to Moog from NAPA. Don't know who supplies Ford with their b-joints. This doesn't include replacement u-joints if you need them. Turns out I don't need b-joints but I know what it will cost if and when I do.

I just had front brakes (plus new rotors) and all four ball joints done by the guy around the corner (in my 97 250HD 4wd). if I remember right it was $860 for the whole mess. That seems like a pretty good price compared to what others here are quoting, but since I only took it in for brakes and the ball joints were a surprise, it seemed like a whole bunch to me at the time! (Incidently, although it's a 250, the front end took 1 ton parts!)

A year ago on my '99 complete ball joint replacement ran $566, parts and labor. The ball joints were Moogs, which are greasable. I printed a "how-to" article from either this site or the ford-diesel site and gave it to them just in case. I wasn't sure how many ball joint jobs they had done on the new SuperDuty's.

Powerstrokeshop.com sells complete ball joint kits using Moog parts that may or may not save you some money over sourcing the parts locally.

Nice write up Dave.
Having done my ball joints already, the only thing you left out, was the swear words some where in the middle of the project. But most people can come up with thier own words to use.
