Hello all. I am new here, but have read a ton of good info. I have a 79 supercab f150 with 3/4 leaf springs on front & back. 400 motor with performer edelbrock carb and intake.
I just shredded my rear end. I had to pop it into 4X4 to get home. I HAD 4:10 gears. I run the higway alot, would 3:73 gears work better for gas mileage? Would I need to use 1st gear in a manual shift with these higher gears ratios?
What would it do to my towing capabilities?
You shouldn't have any problems with the 3.73s. You will need granny when starting out with a heavy load. The mileage should improve, and your rpms will drop. The capacity will probably decrease a little, but I think overall you will be happy. I had 3.73s with 33" tires and I liked it, but had to switch to 4.10s. Now it is a little too low geared for my taste. I wish I had the old gearing back and that is with 33s. You probably are running smaller, so 3.73s will still be fairly low geared. Ted
