I just replaced the ECT. The engine still misses. I thought I heard a snapping sound that might me a shorting spark. I taped a small mirror to the end of a magnetic pick-up tool and there it is. #5 is shorting around the center of the plug to the grounded outside of the plug.

What causes this and how do I fix the situation.

The wires are only 3-4 weeks old.
If I bent the connector to the plug, can it be adjusted to fit correctly?

Will di-electric grease help?

Should I return the one wire to the store?

Nice find!

I'm not sure I understand completely...is it arcing right through the boot? Try exchanging the suspect wire with another one and see if the problem follows the wire, or stays with the plug/cylinder.

And yes, a little dielelctric grease around the rim of the plug wire boots is adviseable.

What if I put dielectric grease on the contact? I may have used it on the contact of #5 wire also.

Would that increase the resistance enough to divert the spark around the plug?

What solvent would clean off the dielectric from the contact?

Yes. Dielectric grease does NOT conduct electricity, and that's why it makes a good protector of electrical contacts and connections. Clean all the grease off the plug and boots and then just use a little dab around the inside rim of the boots.
