bronco II five speed trouble

I've an 88 bII 4x4 w/ five speed manual.Lately it has developed the habit of leaving forks engaged when I pull the shifter into neutral.the one of paticular concern is,when looking down from the drivers seat,furthest to the right and on top or five-reverse,I think.the forks don't slide freely so I don't suspect detent mechanism.Never had one of these trannies apart,so Im not sure of problem areas but I assume they function basically the same as any other manual.Experienced advice and suggestions are welcome.Like to find out what exactly the trouble is and if i have to drop the tranny.
