Rattling cats are driving me crazy.

Ok!!!!!

After all the rattling cat threads that have been posted on this site, SOMEONE by now has had to figure out a way to make them stop.

Who's got the answer!!!!!!?????

I feel your pain. I fought that problem for months. If you search all my threads, you can find out the whole story. Long story short, it was only my left side, and I now have only one functioning cat on that side. The body is still there, and the O2 sensor, but it is empty. If my right sides start, I will be buying 2 highflow cats. They are listed either on ****** Performance or the Motorhaven site, I forget which. It specifically says for a 4.2, you can replace two standard cats with one high flow. They were very reasonable on price too. Just pay a flat rate to get 'em welded on.

Your rattling cats are already shot. Mine was in pieces inside, and that happened right after the 100k point. Just my .02 , but I would go high flow.

Tom,

Seems like all things point to where your cats are in bad shape. I know that your truck only has 15k miles on it. That's the weird part. Try this thread, maybe it will help you or maybe not. Worth a try: http://www.rangerovers.net/repairdetails/catalytic.html

Thing is it's under warrenty. But I know if I take it to the dealer they'll tell me that the cats went bad because I installed an aftermarket exhaust system and squeek their way, again, out of fixing my truck. I've already thought of the screw AND clamp method myself and neither worked.

I refuse to believe that the cats are bad already. I had no problems with my trucks before but it seems now that i've hit 15K miles, all kinds of things are starting to go wrong with it and it's really worrying me.

I've been considering trading the truck in for a dodge. They have a 4K cash back right now that would help cover any negative equity. I'm tired of the lack of power and the auto trans. I want a 5.7 Hemi with a 5 speed.

Do they have a 5-speed Hemi manual? I thought the hemi only came in the full size trucks with an auto. ???

I gotta agree with you Tom. Personally, I'd rather have a new 5.7 Hemi full size over the 4.2 also. I just don't have the money. Those things are quite a bit faster than our trucks also. Either way, our trucks definately have good ups and even gooder downs.

gooder????? Only you Joe.

You know, I really haven't researched the 5.7's so I don't know. But even in an auto it's a monster. I also don't have the money. I've been looking at another motorcycle as well too so...if I had to choose between a new truck or another bike, i think i might just go for the bike......alot cheeper, and better on gas. You know the weird thing about Dodge, check it out yourself, they don't have a website. That's the goofiest thing I've ever seen. A major manufacture that doesn't have a website showing you a line up of their vehicles??? weird.

Figure out which cat is making the noise. I had a same problem on my fathers 97 f150 with 4.6 There is a stamped sheet metal welded to each of the cats with the part number on it. Most of the time the several of the small welds break and the metal rattles between the cat and the cover. Reach up there and pull the metal out and the rattling should stop.
It worked on mine, and I was lucky to live next door to someone who works in a muffler shop and he told me about the fix, he said he does it several times a month

How do you just reach up there? The space between the cat and the heat shield is about 1/4 inch and is at a hard to reach angle. I already tried stuffing something in between the cat and the sheild but it was impossible. I tried for hours.

The drivers side rattles. It always seems to be that one. My truck is now making a twanging noise, like plucking a rubber band or a string. The sound is coming from under my truck someplace but is not engine related. I have a musical truck! Between the rattling cats and the twanging noise, i can't even hear my motor, exhaust, stereo, traffic, or anything else. But it sure embarrassing sitting at a stop light. I feel like turning my motor off just to avoid it.

On another note. If any of you guys read the review on this site of the 2004 F150, you will find that in the 1/4 mile test, the "Fake" Hemi Dodge beat all the other trucks clean sweep. It's a fact. That trucks got a fast motor. And Dodge's are unbreakable, i know from first hand race track experience.

I had the same problem on a Lincoln LSC a few years back. The dealer replaced both (dual exhaust) under warranty. Good luck.
