towing a 1960s 13ft travel trailer from New Mexico to Washington state. I plan on installing a standard class III hitch. I have a 98 2dr explorer with a 210hp V6, Automatic. Any experience towing with this vehicle?
Make sure you get a towing rated transmission cooler installed. and change your tranny fluid every 12,000 miles if you are towing.
I had my tranny cooler installed "in-line" with the exisiting tranny cooler that is in the radiator. this way the tranny fluid will not get to cold in the winter and not overheat when I am towing or int he summer
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Mar-02 AT 11:25 AM (EST)]What does the trailer weigh and do you have the towing package? As long as the trailer is within your vehicles rating and as long as you have the tow package you shouldn't have any problems once you get the class III hitch. I towed my 5'x8' enclosed trailer total weight about 3000 lbs. from Ohio to Arizona in May '98. Mine is a '97 4x4 Sport with the SOHC. I didn't have any problems at all, it towed fine. I also towed the trailer on several other occasions around town. The 5-speed automatic makes taking off easier. Be sure and keep it out of OD or your torque converter will constantly unlock on every grade which builds up heat.
I have a 2000 4x4 auto V6SOHC and have towed my Coleman pop-up which weighs about 2,500lbs. Ford specs the max tow capacity for this vehicle at 5,740 lbs but that INCLUDES the vehicle contents (people, dogs, coolers etc). The only problems I've encountered is that the tounge weight for the trailer is propably close to 300lbs due to the propane tank, battery and water heater tank and it really makes the back end sag (with gear in the back). I put air shocks in to help with the sag. Additionally, as posted above, make sure you lock out your auto transmission. That has kept me going less than the 75mph speed limit in many of our areas. Peak tourque is at 3,250rpm so I don't really try to run it much higher then that. One last thing, the explorer really is slow pulling the full trailer, faimily, gear etc (probably 3,500lbs) over our steep 10,000ft plus passes here in the Rookie mts and you might want to put a trailer brake control in your cab (I did) if you have brakes on your trailer. Good Luck P.S. The tranny cooler is a must for longevity of the transmission.
