I would really appreciate if anyone can help me identify my transmission. I pulled it out this afternoon and set it next to the new C-6 that is to go in to take it's place and realized that I had a problem. My owner's manual would have me believe that it's a cruise-o-matic - but I've not heard of these in a truck. On the other hand, the shift pattern on the column looks like the cruise-o-matic pattern in the manual. The transmission is 26 1/2 inches long (from the bellhousing to the plate for the u-joint). It has a detachable bellhousing and a square pan. Thanks,
Kyle
The C6 didn't appear until later. What you have is a cruise-o-matic as you say. C6 was designed to be used with the FE engines. (352, 360-390 )It was also called a FMX tranny back then. There was some minor differences between the FMX and the cruise-o-matic. Is there still a tag on the side of the case? Someone can better ID it that way.
As long as you have a truck C-6, and it has the correct bell housing pattern for your engine, you should be fine.
Most likely, you will need to do some driveline changes, but that should be the hardest part of it. Possibly need to re-route the cooling lines, but that is easy.
I have run into this just now as well. I have a car C-6 (for my 352), and the side shift lever is a problem.
The truck side lever is parallel to the ground when in Park, and straight down when in Low or 1st.
The car one point down about 45 degrees forward when in Park, and 45 degress vto the rear when in 1st or Low.
This angle creates a problem for the shift rod (from the steering column) in our trucks, because there isn't enough arc for the shift rod to actuate the lever backwards into a full pattern.
The fix is to put a truck shift lever in it's place but you have to disassemble the transmission to do it.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to send the C-6 back and have my cruise-o-matic rebuilt. I don't want to change the driveline - prefer to have the original flavor.
kc....Great choice...Im one who likes things original too...the only thing I have noticed as sort of a quirk on these is them popping out of park if column lever not fully up and in its park position..
