99psdcrew-
My tranny was the same way, seemed to shift early and not at the appropriate time. As my old man mentioned earlier, I had the tranny program updated and also had to put in a new exhaust backpressure valve (located at the front of the block) and it works like a normal transmission now. The EBPV senses the amount of backpressure from the manifold and will vary the shifts depending on the amout of backpressure. My valve was bad and had to clean out the pipe that led to it, all carboned up.
Has anyone replaced their EBPV themselves? I have the workshop manuals and instructions. Is it harder or easier than it looks? Any part numbers or seals, etc. to look for when ordering? Thanks in advance
I bought my "99 PSD used with 30,000 miles and it has always made the exact sound you describe. I've heard plenty of other 99's with the same sound so I assumed it was normal. I now have 86,000 mi and just got a new tranny under the extended warranty (shift problems **and metal chips in the tranny oil pan***). Much to my pleasant surprise the dealer also replaced the TC and tranny oil cooler. When I picked up the truck, it sounded like a new truck!! The TC noise was gone and it now sounds like all the other newer PSDs.
Well, that's good to know. I thought is was just my imagination when I thought I heard another truck sounding like mine. At least I don't have to keep one under the seat just in case.....

I'm assuming that since they replaced the tranny, the also put in the newer TC, which, yes, would result in less TC noise and sound like the newer trucks. I can handle a little more noise as long as my TC is stronger than the newer single disc ones.
