1991 explorer gas leak
My 1991 explorer 4x4 developed a gas leak. It looks like it is coming fron the top of the gas tank on the drivers side above the
end of the leaf spring. Can anyone tell me if this is a gas line or if i need a new tank. i need to figure this out because its starting to get worse
thanks

What you will find is the fuel sending unit's top is made out of steel. The sending unit is located on top of the gas tank. You can imagine what happens to steel after salt and water get a hold of it. The steel on the sending unit fuel lines and the top itself rust out allowing gas to leak. 3 ways to fix it, 2 involve you dropping the tank, third let the shop do it. 1st drop the tank (make sure it is almost empty). To remove the gas line you'll need some special shims to pop the lines loose (Trak-Auto, or Auto Zone carry them). Buy a new unit from your dealer ($100.00 + or -) and install.
2nd Drop tank. Remove sending unit. Scrape away rust with wire brush. Make sure the area is rust and dust free (Don't get any in the unit itself). Paint or spray with rust inhibitor (Extend), let dry. Then coat the top with 1 of 2 things. 1- Rubberized undercoating or by a tube or 2 of JB Quick and completely coat the top and lines with JB Quick. Let completely dry before installing and testing. The best way to be sure of no leaks is to buy the new unit. Hope this helps. 1991s were well known for this problem.
