surging and dieing

My friends 96 f250 psd started to get a slight surge a couple of weeks ago now it'll surge and die for a few seconds and refire while driving. Sitting there running it surges but didn't die. Only mods to the truck are a airfilter and straight pipe.
Thanks for any help. Eckart

Question

My 2003 Excursion with 7.3L diesel runs fine but at random intervals (once every two weeks, etc) it will "skip" when running, either accelerating or at constant rpm's..the jerk is unnerving..after the skip...it runs fine until the next time. On occasion when I am idlling up to a traffic signal, it will die, but can be immedieately restarted....What's up??

It could possibly be the cam position sensor. Have it checked for codes if you can. If it is the sensor the International dealer will be the cheapest. Might look on ebay also. Hope this helps.

My 97 7.3 was doing the same thing. They found a bad cam sensor and also had a burned wiring harness under the valve cover. Come to fine out this shorted out my PCM computer. A total cost of $950. Anyway, something to check.

I had the cam position sensor replaced by the dealer and the problem stopped..apparently solved.
