when should i not use overdrive? ive heard when ever you tow or haul anything, but my dad has had a f350 for 11 years now and he hauls alot and said he has only taken it out of overdrive twice, and has no problems from his truck at all. however myself i had a suburban (i know i was young and stupid, i just traded it for my f250) that i put 3 transmissions in. does anybody know the answer?
The answer is " When the Transmission starts to search or shift alot to find the correct gear for the hill or load your towing ".
Heat is the biggest problem a tranny will face .Searching and shifting cause heat within your tranny .
Things you can do
have the biggest aux cooler on the tranny
have guages installed to monitor temp
Change the fluid way before it is recommended, filter too!
I agree with the above post. As I understand it, we are safe to tow in OD as long as the trans is not searching for a gear you are OK. I have the trans temp gauge installed and I have not reached any high temps yet towing my trailer (only about 6K lbs) and the trans has not done any searching (yet).

Do you ride around town with OD on or off when you're not towing? Someone posted on one of the boards I keep up with that they turn off the OD whenever they are driving around town.
thanks for the advice from everyone, that helps. iam new to this but i have been getting alot of info from reading everything on this site and its alot of good stuff. thanks again
THANKYOU, THANKYOU,THANKYOU,to all of you. You are actually humans that can read and comprehend what you read. You guys wouldn't beleive how many times I've tried to explain this to the E4OD drivers and others that own inferior trucks, read that GM and Dog er Dodge. According to these types my owners manual says not to tow in OD. Sure is funny when I show them the manual and have them show me where it says this, they suddenly can't understand the written word.
I've towed with Fords since '88 and had a 70 Chevy C30 from '70 till '88. My trucks rarely move unless they are towing close to GCVW limits. Prior to the Torque Shift and Allison transmissions, rebuilds occurred at 70k to 90k. I have always used OD when available and locked it out of OD if searching occurred. No personal experience with Dodge but what I have heard is not encouraging.
