ok, I have pulled my camper (4300lb wet) this past weekend on a short pretty much flat road trip. pulls great, plenty of power and handles the trailer very well. Used to tow this trailer with 00 Mountaineer v8 3.73, terrible tow vehicle, so let me tell you this thing is like being in heaven. My only concern is my next trip which will be in the northern pa mountains. I have the 5.4 engine but only 3.55 rear. Why did ford not put a 3.73 rear with the 5.4 4x4 in 2000? does anyone know. maybe I shouldn't worry so much, i don't mind going slow and down shifting. just glad to have a vehicle that can handle my trailer. I made this same trip last year with the Mountaineer with 3.73 rear and it climbed the hills very well with the 302 v8. Do you think i'll be ok with this thing. I do not have the money right now to have the gears changed so that is not an option right now. just wondering what other people tow with the 3.55 gears. Thanks, and this forum is great. have only had the expy about a month now but have learned so much just reading this forum. Thanks again and sorry so long.
Not sure that's gonna matter, really... I'm sure it'll downshift itself to 3rd on the steep stuff.
Sometimes mine will "hunt around" for the correct gear. I actually prefer to leave it in 3rd rather than have constantly shifting in and out of OD....supposedly not good for the tranny.
