Yes '86-'87 was the last of the true-wood-floor-bed, chain rattling, brake light hanging Flearsides.....

Could it be that he has a bumper on the truck that helps "hide" it?
Mine sticks out far also but I don't have the bed on it or the rear bumper so cant say if it does stick out or not.

That looks nice, thanks for stopping by!

Of that generation, I always like the 78-79 variants with the rectangular headlights... but I still really like the paint color of yours, you don't see much of that color anywhere these days.
