Hmmm, yeah going 80 down the freeway you really wouldn't need a fan at all would you.

The oil cooler is mounted to the drivers side of the block....I've never pulled one but it looks like a real PITA. At the rearmost end of the cooler (right in front of the oil filter housing) the block heater installs right through the cooler. Other than that I don't know much about it. Not real sure what to tell you on the pump either, other than installing a real pressure gauge on it. International Tech has some good pump pictures in his gallery.

Unless somebody does it first, I'll look up the removal procedures for the cooler when I get home Monday.

I know I'm old and confuse easy, but either I'm confused or missing something. Do some SDs have an oil temp idiot light? My 03 doesn't. It has an oil pressure gauge, which isn't really a gauge, just an idiot light with a needle. There is a transmission temperature gauge, but it doesn't have a light associated with it. Now there is a "check gage" light, but it on illuminates only if the coolant temperature is high, oil pressure is low or the fuel gauge is at, or near empty.

Here's an idea. Go get one of those laser beam thermometers that look like a pistol. Go out and drive the truck until the light comes on and then pull over and measure the temperature of the oil pan. Then get back here and let us know what you found.

There have been several minor changes to the dash over the years. For example: 01's like mine do not have a tranny temp like your 03, but it has an voltmeter which yours does not. Mine does have an oil temp idiot light along with the oil pressure idiot gauge. It's located right above the "water in fuel" light in the top left corner of the dash panel.

You know, the oiling system on the PSD is just as overengineered as the cooling system....I wonder if it's as simple as as a bad EOT sensor? It's right out in the open, easy to change...no idea how much it would cost.

Hey Bubba! Long time no type...how you been dude?

If the EOT failed completely it definately would set a code.....and the truck probably wouldn't start, but I was just wondering if it could just not be exactly right and messing with the gauge somehow.

RT94 if you still want to pull the oil cooler...

1. Drain radiator
2. Unthread block heater element from oil cooler rear head
3. Unbolt front and rear oil cooler heads from block.

The cooler tube just has o-ring seals securing it to the cooler heads, so you should just be able to twist/pull/pry the tube out. Reassemble with new o-rings.

Howdy fellers! Been real busy around here building stalls and still mourning the passing of old Gray.

I'd have to have a real guage to see if the oil was really getting that hot. Cookie isn't there a way to hook one up, temp, to see if it were really getting that hot? I saw heats avatar, that boy something else!

horsecop, I have added an oil temp guage to my wish-list. I wondered if the oil temp light being on was a fluke, too. Heck, the engine was running full song the first time it happened, and it didn't offer to show any signs of stopping, or even blinking for that matter. Of course the first time I stopped ASAP. There was no doubt that second time, however. When the water temp guage hit the top, that was a sure sign....she was definitely HOT.

BTW, all....I am in the process of checking things and I will let you all know how it comes out as soon as I can.........

OK...I had just a few minutes this evening....

The fan clutch appears to be OK. I didn't have time to crawl under the truck and look at the oil cooler before it got dark outside. I did, however, plug in my tuner and read the codes. My truck has thrown a 1211 code. Does this have anything to do with it? Hopefully someone knows what this code indicates. I can't remember for the life of me where I put my little book with all that data in it.........
