I was looking at one of the archived articles https://www.ford-trucks.com/articles/axlechart.php concerning engine and rear end codes. I noticed there is a "C" engine code in the 1995 manual. It says this is a 5.9 engine. Did ford put a cummins in some of the pickups between 1991 and 1995?? I've seen a couple advertized in the past. Was this a turbo model? Anyone out there have one?
Well I know of a F350 (possible dually) 1993 with a C engine code. I havn't been able to find out what engine is in the truck yet as they were closed on Sat when I called.
I have never heard of any Ford with a factory Cummins but anything is possible and if it has one it will be turbo diesel, '89+ Dodges were all turbo diesels
Thanks for the input. I have a vague recollection that a cummins could be ordered on F350's, but I was thinking it was back in the mid-late '80's. But perhaps I am confusing that option on bigger ford trucks such as F700's.

Ok, I found a vin checker website. The "C" code is a 7.3 IDI turbo of the 1993/1994 version. The 7.3 IDI non-turbo is a vin K. So it appears that the axle code decoder chart is incorrect.
All fords I've seen have a "M" for idi diesel, "K" for idi turbo diesel and "F" for the powerstroke diesels. If I remember correctly the "C" was for a gasser.

Hi, thanks for the reply. The 'M" code is the older 1988 to 1993 7.3 'fuel injected' diesels. The are sometimes referred to as pre-injected. In 1993 and 1994, ford offered a Indirect inject diesel in both a natural aspirated version and a turbo version. I'm not sure of all the differences between Indirect Inject and pre-injected, but there was a difference. C code is not the gasser. the EFI 460 code is G and the 351 is H. I've recently got emails from 2 sellers of these Indirect inject 93/94 models, one selling a C and another selling a K indicating that the 'C' code is the factory turbocharged unit and the K code is the un-turbocharged IDI. Alot of 'K' code diesels seemed to end up with aftermarket turbo units on them so it's sometimes confusing when a fellow advertises "turbo diesel" and then has a 'K' code in the VIN #. F code is definatley the Direct Inject power stroke motor as you mentioned.

Here's what I think is accurate in terms of engine codes. Everyone is free to offer additions or objections.
Y 4.9
G 351 2bbl carb up to 1985
H 1984-'86 4bbl 351 and EFI 351
1 6.9 diesel fuel injected
M 7.3 diesel fuel injected 1988- 92 or 93
K 7.3 IDI 93/94
C 7.3 IDI Turbo 93/94
F 7.3 DI Powerstroke Turbo from '94 1/2 on.
L 460 carb 1987 and older
G 460 EFI 1988 and newer
The following came from my 1994 truck shop manual that covers econoline, F-150-F-350, bronco, F-super duty.Y 4.9 300 I-6
N 5.0 302 V-8
H 5.8 351 V-8
R 5.8 HP 351 V-8
C 5.9 359 I-6
G 7.5 460 V-8
M 7.3 445 V-8
F 7.3 DI Turbo 445 V-8
K 7.3 IDI Turbo 445 V-8
Nowhere in my manual does it mention the 5.9 other than this chart.
I was wondering about that myself. Why does ford insist on calling it a 445 even though International, the manufacturer, says it's a 444. Maybe it is one of Fords selling points, trying to make the engine sound bigger. Who knows.

Well that's what the axle code chart that this website uses for information also. It's very interesting that your manual also includes the I-6 after the 5.9. Maybe they had in mind to put the cummins in the pickup ?? lol If you use http://www.autocheck.com/autocheck/1...209=0&_414=706 and plug in the vin #2FTJW36C7PCB24503 which is a real truck for sale in autotrader it will show that it is a 7.3 IDI. It doesn't say if it is a turbo or not, but I emailed the seller and asked him if it was a factory turbo or aftermarket. He stated it was factory, (but could be wrong). I then emailed a guy selling a 'K" code turbo diesel on ebay asking him if it was factory or aftermarket. He said it was aftermarket but it was the exact same as factory and was a garrett turbo. I guess my sampling of 2 examples doesn't give the best base of information, but that's how I came up with the info so far. Thanks for the input . We'll get to the bottom of this yet.
