My truck has a horrible hood. Just like so many of our older trucks had. There are four other trucks with my same paint scheme - all of them with hoods like mine. All rusted and everything. My question is how I would go about fixing this cheap? I was thinking of popping it off, sanding it down with rough grit paper, then with fine grit paper, and then hit it with spraypaint to match the original navy color. Do I need to primer the hood after the sanding? Is there anything else I need to do? Anything I need to know about this? I'd rather not spend a 100 dollars having somebody else do it for me. Money isn't my friend right now. I have it, but I don't feel like spending it on the hood when I can do it myself. Thanks guys...
I dunno if any of the rest of you have dealt with this.
Also...there are other spots on the top of the cab that has problems as well. Would it be bad if I sanded down the little spots and slapped them with some spraypaint as well.
Do I need to spray some type of clearcoating on after spraypainting as well?
Purely surface rust. Paint's gone adios on must of it, except for the portion that is facing forward, the part of the hood that curves down to meet the grill.
As for looks, anything is better then what it is now. I don't mind if somebody can tell that the hood's been repainted and that it isn't like normal automotive quality. As long as from far away it's ok, and up close its not hideous.
I would think you have a good plan of attack. You will need primer on the bare metal. Then you should clearcoat it over the paint. Use the same brand, or you will have problems. I have to use rustoleum everything, because of cracking due to different brands. Also, if it says to wait 48hrs to cure, wait. I had cracking due to some impatience. Good luck, Ted
