Valley pan in 460

I have been helping my father-in-law work on his "new" service truck- an 83 F-350 with a 460. We removed the intake manifold to change some gaskets and noticed that there is no valley pan beneath the intake. That would not have seemed too strange, except that the gasket kit came with a new one. Now we're wondering if there is supposed to be one, or if the one included in the gasket kit may be for another application.
Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a pan beneath the intake- and exactly what purpose does this pan serve?

Thanks,
Nate

Where/from whom did you order your gasket set? - I need to get a valley pan for my 78 460. Thank you.

The one we got last month which included the pan came from NAPA as well. No part number though.

The intake manifold gasket set I bought from Checker (Kragen) included a valley pan with the gasket on it.

The new engine I bought for my truck included a gasket kit, and in it was one intake manifold gasket by itself. We spent about 2 hours cleaning up the old valley pan before I happened to call Checker and discovered that their gasket kit included the valley pan. The guy I talked to didn't know that until I had him read off what was in the box.

Sure was happy to find out we could quit cleaning off the old one -- it was near impossible to get the old gaskets off.

We just did that a couple of months ago. Don't have a part number, though.

My first question/call for help and I got three answers in less than a day. That is very much appreciated and I thank you. I am glad I found this site.

Use that valley pan. I wish I had one on my truck. Yes, it does keep the hot oil away from the intake manifold so the engine gets a colder air charge in the cylinders, thus you end up with more power.

Valley Pan Gasket Clarification

Just came back from Federated with Fel-Pro Valley Pan and "gasket" kit. Question/confusion - there are two thin "gaskets" riveted to each side (top/bottom) of the valley pan which appears is different than my original. Do I now need a "real" manifold gasket for the bottom of the pan (pan to head) and another for the pan to intake manifold? Thank you.

No -- those strips riveted on are the gaskets. I was concerned about the rivets, but on mine they planned it out and put them where they didn't cause a gap. Valley pan went on real nice and easy and didn't have to mess with it.

Those are the intake gaskets. Valley pan first, small end gaskets on top so intake will seal at front and back.
