ok, i did a seach on this and got results that had nothing to do with this... so if this has been discussed i apologize...
i'm looking at getting an air intake for my 99 ranger 3.0L.. i konw they flow more air and therefor make more hp.. but, does it let more dirt through? are they safe to use in offroading situations?
ok, so if i did get the intake.. there's two sets of wires and i guess a some sort of hose coming off the stock intake.. will the one i buy have places for these things to go? i'm sorry if i'm not making sense.. this is my first truck and i don't know what anything is called.. lol

this is the one i'm looking at... says 11.7hp.. seems like a good deal for 140 dollars.
Some people say that they do let dirt into your engine but I have usd them offroading with no problems,I also use them on my dirt track race car again no problems. As for a 11.7 HP gain I dought it .All I have notices is a better throlte responce {seat of the pants feel}The main reason I use them is the coast of filters in the long run.
When I change my oil it seems to be cleaner now than it was with stock, but that's just me. As far as damage, lots of people use them in off-roading with great success, and my friend got over 300,000 out of his 2.9L with a K&N from day one before it died from leaking too much oil. We're in the middle of the desert where some days the dust blows so badly you can't see your hood.
To answer your question about the wires and hosing... an FIPK made for your particular application should have the necessary connections. If I'm not mistaken, the hose goes to your engine oil? Not sure about the wiring (because my old Ranger didn't have that on the intake tube) but I know exactly what you're talking about. For my custom intake, I "borrowed" an intake tube from a newer Ranger that had the same things you're describing. You could always e-mail the manufacturer of the FIPK you're looking at about the connections...
The wires are for a thermometer on mine, and the hose does go to the heads just as a vent. It said it "Retains all emissions controls". I would assume it had places for them.
Can you give me some info on the 2.9L K&N assembly your friend used. When I visit the K&N site, I can't locate a complete intake conversion kit, just the filter. Doesn't K&N offer the kit or is it jerryrigged?
All he had was the stock filter replacement. And if you want to see jerryrigged, check out my gallery under "modifications". They don't make a FIPK for my truck either so I just got a conical filter MAF adapter, made my own box, and insulated the intake tube. Much cheaper than a FIPK and almost as effective.
