blend door plenum

I'm going to replace the blend door plenum in my 97 5.0 awd explorer this weekend. For guys who have done this before, do you have to discharge the ac system and remove the accumulator and blower motor assembly? Or can you pull the blower motor assembly far enough out of the way to get at the 3 nuts on the engine side of the plenum? Thanks

Have you seen the free blend door fix sticky at the top of this page?

Yes I have looked at it, but my blend door is stuck in one position, and the motor that turns the door is stripped out. So I'm just going to fix it and be done with it. Thanks anyways.

Ive always just unbolted the AC plenum and sqeezed in there with a wrench to remove the nuts. Its a PIA but not as much as discharging and recharging and removing and reinstalling the AC plenum IMHO. Of course I do this in a shop with all the necessary tools so it may be easier for me. I also do not reinstall the inner nuts. I just secure both with the outer nuts.

since the door on my 97 is broken past repair, reading this post leads me to assume that I might also be able to get the plenum out of there without pulling the whole dash? I am willing to try and since this is not a daily driver I can afford to leave it somewhat torn appart for a while... once I have the plenum out can I just get a replacement door or do I need a whole replacement unit for it?

thanks!

You can only get the whole plenum from all my past experiences. You will need to remove the dash far enough to access the plenum, which is darned near complete removal. Its not too hard, just time consuming.

thanks for the reply! sounds like I will just deal with some tape and moving the door to the correct seasonal location by hand for a while... there are other things that need fixing before this
