Pulling Shifter

Okay guys -

I suddenly have a ton of slop in my manual gear shifter. I guess something broke that holds the shifter in position.

I have a 88 F150 5 speed. I removed the boot and see one large nut attached to a bolt through the shift **** handle, but when I removed it - it didn't make any difference. Is there a pin or something somewhere that I am missing to get the shifter off?

Also - is the dealer the only place that would sell the inside parts to the shifter links?

Thanks for the help!

Just below that big nut and bolt you should see a flat circular plate with four allen headed machine screws. remove the allen screws and pull straight up on the shift handle it will all come out. the bottom of the shift handle will have a ball with two slots cut in the right and left sides. look down into the top of the trany and you should see two pins coming in from the left and right . or in your case you will probly only see one, cause one has broken or rounded off. these pins go in to the slots on the ball. i had the same problem. got a clevis pin,( grade five), from the local tractor repair shop. and replaced it with it. old one didnt want to ome out so be pateint.

Thanks a bunch for the help! Shifter came right out. No broken pins, but one does look worn and some of the metal ring around the seal between the shift lever and the ball is broken and piercing through the rubber seal. Guess I will be one my way to the tractor supply store soon. Thanks again...I really appreciate the help!
