Where to buy a 460 shortblock?

I'm looking into getting a 460 short block, or just a block (fishing for an awesome highschool graduation present).

I'm not looking into building a massive hp drag racer here with no coolant and a 500 mile life. I want something to eventually swap into my F-150 after a year or two of accumulating parts.

I'm a complete novice, but i'm looking into mechanics as a future career path, and this would be a great way to get some experience. Everything will be done with experienced guidance, and i'll deffinitly purchase a lot of reading material before starting any part of it.

strongly prefer it to be fuel injected. Probably will look into a slight cam, maybe port the heads, (looks like i'll need a chip and possibly injectors and the like) nice full exhaust system, and make it pretty.

The plan is to build it up with the extra cash i have, and do it well, without cutting corners, like i do with my poor 300.

What is a good place to get a reman 460 block or short block that i can trust not to have square shaped cylinders or missing a couple bolt holes?

How much should i expect to pay for the short block or just the block?

Anyone have one sitting around they'd let go for a good price..?

Thanks in advance.

I'm really, really looking forward to this!

thats an awesome deal!

Aren't those the high compression engines? I'm not looking to fill her with $2.50 a gallon fuel.

But i wouldn't mind the extra ponies either

78 would be low compression. I would check some of the local shops, especially if they have some guys that are into Hi-Po Fords. We have 3 or 4 460 blocks in the back building right now, plus the 2 we just finished and 1 we are still building (we collect them things here ). Otherwise, I would look around at the salvage yards and try and find one there, preferably in a wrecked car that you can hear run.

to be honest with the amount I paid building mine up it would have been the same price to go to Fordmotorsports and buying a long block or even their turnkey. I have roughly $5000 invested in mine. The only parts of mine that are original are the head castings, block, and crank. Bad thing is there isn't a warrenty. So it all depends on what you really want to build it for. Personally I wouldn't change the fact that this is am engine that I built except for the balancing of the crank. I became really good friends with the shop owner over the course of a few weekends dropping by to get his opinion on parts. My point is that I met some great friends along the way building it and I can honestly tell people that I built it, not just attached the intake and valve covers.

I feel just how you do about building it myself. I wouldn't mind paying a lot more, over a long period of time, to have built the engine myself. I'm also looking for a learning experience.

I'll call around the machine shops, unfortunatly there aren't too many around here. Local junk yards are pretty bad too.

Thanks for the help so far

Talk to some of the people in your area that do drag racing or even the tracks. They will be able to point you in the right direction. No one likes to pay for shoddy craftmanship.
