I got a prob with my 302, its an 83, so its got a carb. Ok, my engine will start and it will run , but it will not idle for more than 3-4 seconds. As long as im giving it gas it runs, but sounds a little rough. Ive checked all the vac hoses and have found nothing strange. I have not messed with any of the adjustment screws, ever, so i dont think the prob lies there. This all started last night after I took off the air housing assembly to clean it. When i put it back on and started her up she began doing this. Also, my trans is now acting wierd, doesnt want to shift gears(its a 3 spd auto). This stared at the same time as the prob above, anyone know if theyre related? One last clue about the idle prob, when she dies out she sputters out, not just dies and when i got her running, the mixture seems to be rich. I can smell gas, not raw gas but that rich burning smell. Anyways thats my probs, please help somebody!!!
Sounds like a combination of a float\needle seat problem and a vacuum leak. Check your hoses for any disconnected, cracked or split. Check the function of your choke also a sticking choke can cause a rich fuel condition. Let us know how it goes.
Sorry guys, ive been away a bit. Thanks for the replies but upon further inspection ive come to find that i have 2 cylinders that i believe are not getting any compression, hence the extremely rough idle. Both are on the drivers side, the last two at the back of the engine(#6 & 8, i think). So, i think its time i put her outta her misery, at least for now, until i can get me a new engine. Man, she was fun while she lasted.....
This is off topic, but what carb does she have? Did she run good before all this happened? If you read my post, I have the same bronco with a slightly different problem that no one will reply to..

This sounds like your head gasket is blown, pressure is being pushed into the other cylinder and escaping thru the valves. This will give you 0 lbs. on your compression gauge. Hope this helps.
