Royal Purple Oil ?

A friend was telling me yesterday that he read where Pep Boys was going to start selling all of Royal Purple's products, especially synthetic motor oil for street vehicles. Has anyone heard of this? It's suppose to be a nationwide distribution deal, at all Pep Boys stores. I have not been to my nearby PB store, but was just wondering if this is true or not? Anyone who knows either way, please post. Thank You!

I saw it over the week-end. I don't know when they started to carry it but it is there, at least in New (arm pit of the country) Jersey where I live.

Don't know about at Pep Boys, but I was in Murrays Discount Auto (Detroit, MI, chain) and now they carry Royal Purple oil and tranny fluid. Not that it helps Ed, but for anyone FTEers in the Detroit area. Also shows that over time RP may become much more available.

Why wouldn't they sell it? There's plenty of money to be made there!

Mobil 1 is easy to get and I wonder if Royal Purple is really any better.

Anyone remember what the prices were?

I bet a lot of people are gonna try it out, now that it's a lot easier to obtain.

I'm sure it is easier to get, and probably just as good. However, RP is another revenue stream from people that want it. Not everybody knows what's good when it comes to oils, and when they see something named Royal Purple that costs $6 / quart (at Jegs anyway), they think it MUST be good.

I suspect it is fine oil, but the flash point on the RP 10w40 looked rather shabby for such a high tech oil. The other RP grades seemd fine though. I am not a big fan of Mobil 1 either, though I have used their tranny fluid. What impresses me more is Redline oils. Got some Redline ATF coming for my Mazda 5 speed F150. Will let everybody know if it helps it shift better. I can better justify the price of synthetic in the tranny and rear end where it will be run 10s of thousands of miles.

Make sure you keep the fluid level checked, my brother lost a manual transmission in a ranger after he put synthetic in. He says it leaked out. Didn't know it until it was too late. I dont know if those Mazda transmissions are as prone to leakage as the Mazda M5OD-R1.

Thanks, I have been running the Mobil 1 ATF for the past 40,000 miles. Maybe he had the plugs leak that we hear about so much and that a fix is posted on this site. I am tending to go underneath regularly to inspect for that. Anyway the Redline is supposed come today.

That's exactly what he had. There's 3 plugs on top of it, and that's where it leaked from.

I fixed the leaking plugs on the top of my transmission with three steel cup plugs.

I can’t wait to hear if the Redline ATF makes any difference in the Mazda 5 speed.

I replaced the plugs with OEM parts. No problems since with Mobil 1.
