Talking Train Horn!

Yeah, well i just got the idea that i want to put a train horn on my truck. Does anyone on here have one on there truck? Whats all involed in doing this? I know that i will have to have a air tank, will a 2 horse tank be ok? Im thinking of mounting a tank right under the bed on the frame, and then bolting the train horn under my second tank behined the bumper, and to where u cant hardly see it. if someone could help me out of how to go about this, that would be great. thanks

You can have them, just don't blast them when you're sitting in traffic beside a cop. Truckers usually only use their air horns as a back-up warning.

I thought about installing one in my truck, but with needing an air tank, and installing a compressor, I figure if I'm going to go through all the trouble, I might as well run air tools as well. That would need a bigger air tank, or two. And since there isn't much room under a Ranger, it would have to go in the bed, and that would take away from my already limited cargo area.

Now if I had an F250, I'd do it in a second.

I had Hadley horns I took from a wrecked Freightliner on my truck. Boy they were loud. Just regular air horns though.
I knew a guy who put some trainhorns on his Peterbuilt. Loudest freakin thing I've ever heard. Made his 4 airhorns sound like a vw bug's horn.

As for using them on a pickup, I think that's just dumb. with them being so low you'll never be able to use them with out seriously ****ing people off and possibly causeing hearing damage for them and you.

Get a good set of real airhorns (not them JC Whittney or autozone crap) and you'll have horns you can actually use. And trust me, they are plenty loud when mounted low like on a pickup.

As for legality, I dont think they are. Check you local laws to be sure, but I dont even think real air horns are legal on a pick up if they are beond a certain db.

I know a guy who had a locomotive horn on in his semi also - ended up having to pull it after a safety inspection. As a more serious question - who makes/supplies a much louder then factory horn set up? Not very impressed with what I've seen at auto suppliers (autozone crap) - most are lucky to even match horn in my Grand Marquis, let alone louder.

Well my dads friend jacked it off a broken/ wrecked train or something. But its got the valve on it that u have to open for it to blow. So im taking that off and getting a sileniod(spelling?) for it and a 2hp air tank. Then im going to mount the tank under my bed right behind the cab on the frame... and im going to mount the horn behind the bumper... but i dont know how exactly yet...

A guy back home has one on his Kenworth dump truck and said he can get only a couple blasts out of it until his air pressure gets low. They must really suck it up. It sure gets our attention when he passes down the vally though.

I knew a guy who had one on his service truck. It was a high cube van. He had several ladders mounted to the top that stuck out over the cab. The horn was mounted to the top of the cab. If you glanced at the truck you would miss the horns. Then he'd wait for someone to walk across the parking lot after visiting the 'vomit comet' (roach coach etc) who wasn't paying attention. Then he'd let loose with a couple of balsts and watch them jump out of their skin.

He said he was running it at 90psi. Not sure where he was getting the air from. Since it was a service truck, maybe he already had a compressor on it.

I had a Grover "stutter" air horn off a firetruck, on one of my old trucks. I had it underneath mounted to the frame rail. I used an air tank with a foot valve. I refilled the tank with a schrader valve. It shook the ground went it went off!

Well i have seen them on the show truck curcuit and they all have pretty big air setups, most of them are running a huge airbag suspension setup to begin with. Now i have seen them with nitrogen tanks that blast!! regulated of course...try to find a semi's air tank or 2 and run them along side the frame rails you may be able to squeeze 2 on each side and couple them together....then hook up an airbag selonoid that you can hook to a switch or button, they sell on ebay ill link you to some stuff..

compressor, these are bad **** for airbag setups...they build pressure fast and pretty high PSI... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...904577337&rd=1

selinoid... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33586

now find a good sized pair of semi air tanks (the long skinny ones) and lines and your in bizznazz
