Best sounding exhaust setup for 360/390?

Ok so just in search of more information for the future. What is the best sounding exhaust for a 73-79 style truck w/ 360 or 390 motor? The first step would be to get long tubes because otherwise its a waste of time putting exhaust on without headers. I would then want an H pipe right? And then I am lost because I don't know what the sound will be like with lets say, straight pipes, or chambered mufflers or what? I'm not interested in glass packs because that is just too redneck style. I'm not interested in having the loudest truck or attracting attention of cops. I am open to a somewhat loud but mean sound. I don't want any kind of raspy nastiness though. I want a clean musclecar or 5.0 mustang type sound going on. Do these motors respond well to say flowmaster 40s or some kind of hooker or dynomax or even a stainless muffler and pipes? I've got flow 40s on my 302 Lincoln and I'm happy with them but they are quiet after 2000 rpms with my low output motor.

Oh and I guess it would be good to mention that the truck would not be a daily driver so I would not be worried about loudness on long trips or anything like that really.

hey man i'm doin it right now... i have a set of the cheapo headers from dynomax $119.00 from summit and just bought the flowmaster 40's. it had the dynomax super turbo's on it to begin with but there was not really any sound even at 4500rpm. my wifes minivan screams at 4500...dissapointing so i cut them off. i started it up with no muffler just the header and about 4' of pipe...scary loud... i put on the flowmasters and at idle the rumble is very suttle, @750 rpm. with just the mufflers on i reved er up a few times to about 3000 and its really got that great nastalgic sound. its not too loud but i think under a load, driving these mufflers will sound very nice. i'm not going all the way to the rear of the truck with the tail pipes i'll exit infront of the rear wheels . i just always liked that look. you can go with a glasspack, but they sound sorta silly on a nice machine. you want the rumble without too much noise, go with the flowmaster 50. if you want rumble and some more noise, definatley go with the 40 series. i went to www.flowmaster.com and listened to some sound bites, then made my decision. any car shows in your area over the 4th? i would say hit a big one and look at some older galaxy's or torino's with the 390. i'll bet most are running flowmaster. 1 more thing... put a little more money into the headers and get the "coated" ones, these darn chepos from the factory didnt have all the welds finished off at the flange, which i didnt notice till i started her up for the first time. had to take them back off and do it again. good luck. also if your racing go with the x pipe, if not, dont get to excited and just run the duals.

Check out the sound clips on www.goravin.com, the have 3 different series of mufflers and all 3 sound good. The Mustang would have the loudes type, (Z-33) series sounds like kinda what you are looking for.

The Flow 40s are the easiest and tried and true way but I guess I just wondered if there was anything better just for sound wise on an FE. I was kind of thinking about magnaflows or something although I never thought much of them. One thing that kind bothers me is that all the turbos and some if not all the magnaflows have some kind of interior sound material(fiberglass and magnas have some other kind of special material. But Flowmaster is simply an open chambered case with no filling material inside. It just seems to make more sense. Nothing to burn up, blow out, or retain water. I guess the thing I'm curious about though is what a stainless muffler will sound like.

On another thread in the FE forum theres one guy that posted pics of his dual side exit setup and he used two double exit magnaflows shooting two tips to each side. Looks very nice! So I think that will be my plan. Might as well just stick with the 40s since they go pretty cheap and are the staple of V8 exhaust. I'd feel kinda stupid anyways having flows on my Linc and something else on the truck. Kinda like a traitor
