AC Clutch Noise

It's now early summer in Central IL (and I've got a brand new 2004 Screw FX4 loaded)
Just started running AC today and discovered a slight ticking noise inside the cab.
At first I thought it came from the back but my wife in the passenger seat reported that the sound came from the front right side.
Must have been a sound reflection because when I had her drive I could hear it from the front right corner as well.

We narrowed it down to the AC because the sound only kicked on when the AC was on. It was also odd because the sound could only be heard when I was running over 1500 RPM.
We opened the window (on the passenger side and the noise was LOUD)
Tick, Tick Tick about every 7 seconds.

Any way we get home pop the hood and I discover that the tick, tick noise is coming from the AC clutch as the AC is cycled on and off. (It's kind of neat to watch, I had my wife turning the AC on and off, you can actually see the thing kick on and off, each time it Ticks rather loudly)

Well that's my little story...

I was wondering if a loud AC clutch is a normal thing in a 04 F150? (The reason why I ask is that this is the first vehicle in over 10 Years that even has "working" AC. for all I know, all cars with an AC clutch have loud oscillating ticking noises)

Thanks for you opinion.

Just now turning on your AC? Must be nice because mine has been on for a couple of months down in here Texas Anyway, the other vehicles that I have had (mostly Chevy's) have always had a clicking noise when the AC clutch cycles on and off. I don't really ever recall being able to hear it from the cabs interior however.

You should either turn up your stereo, or take it in and have the service people have a look see at it. While there, try listening to another new truck and see if the sound is that pronounced.

Good Luck

I think the A/C is pretty loud IMO. I have to keep the windows closed and the radio up so I don't hear it.

Had the same "tick" sound in my XLT. Sounds like a relay kicking in. Took it into the dealer and they say it's normal. Haven't noticed it as of yet in my Lariat. For what it's worth.

I normally don't drive with the windows down when it's hot, but when you pass gas........you get the picture, lol.

Windows down upon fluffing an air biscuit is the proper procedure in confined spaces

CaveDave and F150Texan......

My sense of humor is "almost" as sick/funny as yours....

Since I've had my "rear gears" tuned up, my "air biscuits" (as F150Texan calls them) sound better than they used to.....but the smell still remains pretty much the same.....

They are DEFINITELY a "windows down" event.....regardless of the weather outside!!

My 2005 STX also has this ticking noise. I thought something was wrong until I read this posting. A freind of mine with a 2005 XLT SCREW is also noticing this. Strange, but I guess its just the nature of the beast!

Just discovered this issue last night ('04 Lariat SCAB). It got to 90+ in Philly this week so the windows went up and the A/C went on. I haven't popped the hood to listen to it from the outside but my truck is doing the same thing. At first I thought it was the auto temp kicking on and off but the intermittent noise occurs even when on various manual fan settings. My estimate was about 5 seconds of noise followed by 10-15 of normal sounds. Thankfully I came across this post before throwing a fit at the dealership. It is a nusance humming/buzz, click sound that will likely blur into the background of my conciousness over time. This may be a pitfall to the new quiet cab concept. Noises from within are more noticable.
