New Diesel Auto Trannys
I'm looking to buy a new SuperDuty F-250 Diesel. Most of the dealers stock has the overdrive automatic(I'm assuming it's still the E4OD). The salesman told me the new ones are better than the earlier 90s ones, better torque converter etc. Is this true? Anybody got one with a lot of miles on it? Or am I better off to wait for a manual 6 speed? Thanks for any info.

LAST EDITED ON 03-Nov-00 AT 03:21 PM (EST)[p]I mulled over this one myself when I ordered my 2001 PSD. I opted for the manual trans for the following reasons:
a) Higher engine output--read the release at https://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/2001_superduty.html
b) 4L100 is a definite improvement over the E4OD but it's still only a 4-speed and IMHO it's too new to gamble on. In another couple of years, it very well may prove itself but until then if it doesn't say Allison on the case, I have to assume it can be disemboweled by a Diesel. When a reliable 5- or 6-speed auto trans shows up, I'll gladly pay the $2-3k it really costs. Until them, I'll row my own gears ;>

I just bought a 99 F250 PSD with an auto with 52000 miles on it. The auto seems to be working fine and I have heard the horror stories about the torque convertors. I have been driving PSD'S with the 5 speed for 5 years and have also drove the 6 speed. The PSD'S in my opinion perform much better with the manual.
