alright guys, is it possible for a guy to fit and find a 3.5" downpipe for a '96 PSD? i recently purchased a chip good for 85 horses and some odd lb ft of torque but with all the other mods, 10k mod, shimmed fpr, straight pipe, i think im gonna need a better down pipe. now the three inch is just 3" but i want maximum exhaust flow out the turbo. now i could make one but i would need the turbo connector piece, and the pipe but i would rather buy one that will fit between the wall and the block. so help me out
Powerstroked, I think i remember someone making a two piece dp for the older trucks so you don't have to modify the firewall. Can't remember who makes it but you might want to ask around.
Even with a 2 piece you will have to bang, bang, bang. A 3" two piece will fit without banging. A 3.5 will not. A 2 piece simply makes putting it in much easier.
that would be nice, as i went to motorhaven.com and they have 3'' downpipe for the '94 to '97 and i want 3.5". so i will ask around. Quadzilla where are you when i need you?
what if a guy was to go 3" out the turbo and down until there was room to go to 3.5" then straight to 4" and straight out? or go from 3" out and down to 4" as soon as there was room between the wall and block.see right now im stock garbage downpipe to 3.5" straight pipe. in the future i want to go something like 4.5" straight pipe preferably from 3.5" downpipe but i suppose i could settle for 3" out and down far enough to go 3.5" or even 4". but what do you suggest to do right now?
well if you really want it to fit put a body lift on your truck i got 3 inchs on my with a 3 inch down pipe and i got lots of room for more
you just need to keep some backpressure though i put the 3 inch downpipe on mine then went 5 inch straight pipe all the way back but now my super chip is tellin me i got low backpressure
how did it sound with the five inch straight pipe? i have heard you have to basically have a powerhouse to run five inch straight exhaust, and right now thats far from what i have. i might go three inch downpipe then four inch straight pipe or i have thought about going 3inch downpipe to the stock 3.5" stright pipe and about halfway down the system going to 5" and given that a try. is the downpipe worth it? i bet if you kept the stock downpipe and went 5" straight pipe you would be okay but thats a guess

What you're describing is the Hypermax downpipe. It starts at 3" at the turbine outlet, and bells to 3.5" once it clears the firewall. To expand it to 4", all you have to do is add a "reducer" and you're at 4". That's pretty much what I did, except I went to 5".

it sounds pretty good while it is idling if you walk on the right side of the truck you can just hear the turbo wistling so loud plus at high rpms it is LOUD

IMO the downpipe was worth it the one i had was that stock piece of crap i had the stock downpipe then 5 inch all back and it sounded good but i like knowing that my exhaust isnt crushed so that it will fit between the engine and firewall, the best my truck has sounded (the best ford ive ever heard) was when i had the stock downpipe going into 3 inch then going into 3.5 then going back into 3 inch then going back into 3.5 then to a 5 inch echo tip. (the 3 inch was 3 inch pipe replacing the cat and the muffler) my $.02
ps in the future im considering getting a gibson muffler, one of those mufflers that is straight pipe with little groves or cuts in it to give it little backpressure supposivly suppost to make it louder im thinkin it might be worth $50

Right here, buddy. You also said this:

Having problem find where to buy this downpipe. Can you help?

Where do you get this theory that you need backpressure for your engine?? If you do need any backpressure, your turbo is providing it. Last I knew a four stroke engine doesn't need any back pressure, for best performance you normally want to get the exhaust away from the engine as quickly as possible. Other people on this forum have said that backpressure is needed, but I don't understand why. ???
