[QUOTE=B_7700_4X4]What mods have you done to your 4.2L? I used to have one and it felt like the brakes were on when you tried to accelerate hard. I never had any problems with it or anything, just no power.
single cab 5 sp ,superchip,ca intake,70mm mass airflow, true duals, throttle spacer..... its not a rocket or anything but its quick enough............and as for u jimmy dean, we should race from 0-100 and u know i would win.......u cant hang past 60......u know it....lol

Way to go, I don't like drivers that think they own the road. I had a similar incident but it was me in my Ranger and some *** driving a early 90's chevy 1500. He cut me off big time, so it got the road rage in me a goin. He happened to turn the same way I was going to be heading so I caught up with him at a stoplight. He had duals out the back and it was all fancy'd up, so I thought maybe he had something there, but at least wanted to make him prove it. Green light and I got a good start, was up about half a length through first gear, good solid shift into 2nd and it was over. Had him by about 3-4 lengths. (The best part was that my truck was completeyl stock yet except for a drop in K&N, so I'd love to see a rerace now) Well I wasn't about to get pulled over so I slow to the speed limit, which just so happened to be about the time I pull up next to a little old granny doing about 10 under the speed limit. She had plates from the same county as the guy in the chevy so I got mean and decided to drive right next to her, for the next 10 miles, which was about 9 miles out of my way, doing 45 in a 55 with the guy in the chevy following the whole way with no way to pass because the median on that road is divided the whole way. I'd like to think that I taught him a lesson, even though I'm sure it didn't, but it at least made me feel better.

umm I raced a ford ranger about a month ago on the highway and no one won the race! It was a late 80's ranger just by looking at it.. I was driving down main street and saw this ranger with exhaust(which sounded TERRIBLE), worse than a ricer...so i followed him and he led me out to the highway.... We both took off on a running start (me behind him). we were probably rolling at 30 mph when we turned onto the highway and I caught up right beside him and flipped on my radar detector. When we both reached about 95-100 I let off and turned back off to head into town. He looked pretty happy because he turned on his flashers as if he just kicked my ****. My friends with me agreed that he had to have had a souped up engine... Do you guys think a stock late 80's ranger engine would stay with me in my 2001 4.2?? or do you think he had mindeled with his engine?

If only they offered Rangers with a 4.2. It would make sense, they have too many motors with similar displacement. I guess it's not as bad now that they stopped using the pushrod 4.0, but there is still 3.8, 4.0 SOHC and 4.2 V-6's, all with similar output. I'd like to see them pick one and use it universally. I have no experience with the 4.2, but all of you here seem to really like them. It does have the most output of them all. You would think that it would put more money in Ford's pocket while being able to offer lower prices to consumers because they combined 4 engines into 1 and can save more on parts and tooling and whatever else goes into the cost of making a motor.
One of these days I will take my Ranger to the track. I've never raced at a track before, so I imagine my reaction time will not be very good, but it would be nice to know where I stand. I would guess low 16's with my mods, but I also have 32" tires slowin me down a bit.
Anyways, I hope you guys don't mind me hanging around in the 4.2 froum since I don't have a 4.2, it just seems like you guys are a good group with a good sense of sarcasm that the other forums don't have. You guys have a lot of the same type of mods as I do, and it's on a V-6, so it kinda fits in here.
