Strange noise

I have a 99 ranger XLT, 4x4, 4.0 (kinda like my name says). Anyways, i have a wierd noise that i can't figure out. It is a humming noise that comes from the passenger side right in front of the firewall. It sounds like when you drink half a bottle of pepsi and blow across the top. (best i can do at describing the sound). It makes the noise only at idle or a little bit higher. If you tap the gas it goes away, but when it returns to idle it comes back. It mostly only does it when its hot. Usually it goes away after a few minutes. At first i thought it was the air filter (because of the whistling noise) But i figured out it is closer to the firewall than that. The heater and cruise control are back there on that side. Maybe a leaf or something in the heater???

well i appreciate any help. Any other questions and i can go check if im not sure.

could be the exhaust system. they can make some pretty strange noises.

The most common problem for noise is the IAC, have you listened around there?

Try a section of hose, one end to your ear, the other as a probe, to listen in the suspected area or around a component.

This homemade, low tech stethoscope probe, can help you locate the local sound, in the troubled area.

Just be careful doing it, lest you get wound up in a belt or pulley & we read about it in the papers.lol

That sounds like your common IAC failing. If you can describe the sound as a foghorn, then replace the IAC and you'll be fine.

Yeah, foghorn kinda describes it. Im gonna go look in the haynes manual to see exactly where the IAC (Idle Air Control...?) is. I'll let you know if it is in the right area. Im gonna have to put a hose in my truck, because it doesn't do it all the time.
