I only put in 4... acutally just filled it up to the fill hole when I had the top cover off.

Do any of you have an M5OD out of the truck? Or know someplace that does? I would love to be able to see a picture of the M5OD uninstalled so I could see the damn drain plugs..know where to grab and everything.

About the rubber plugs mentioned above:

There are 3 rubber plugs in the rear of the shift rail channels in the top cover of the transmission. To change them I find it easiest to remove the transmission mount on the transmission crossmember in order to lower the transmission a few inches. Some models require removing the bolts in the top cover so that you can raise the cover for access to the plugs. Pull the plugs out with a small pair of pliers, clean the holes and the area around the plugs. Apply a small amount of rtv to the new plugs and push them into the holes. Reassemble those things you removed and top up the transmission oil with Mercon III.
If you have the transmission where the access is easy I have also made a more permanant repair by using small metal cup plugs and driving them into the holes.

Also in some cases (Like with me) It might be easyer for a more unexperieanced person to go and take out there seat/carpet and just pull off the top tranny cover. This is the method I used when changing my shift forks (Just pulled the top cover and took the fork assembly in to be fixed.

For a lot of heavy towing with a Mazda 5 speed I would definitely go with Redline ATF, or possibly their MTL. It has the protection of a gear lube but won't tear up the syncros like a gear lube likely would. My book says 3.8 quarts of ATF. I tried a trick someone posted on FTE, to run a plastic tube about 4 or 5 feet long from the tranny fill hole up under the hood and pour the ATF in there. Much easier than how I had done it in the past. Also had to jack up one side of the truck to get the full 3.8 qts in without it leaking out the hole. Use a tube about 1/2 OD or possibly slightly bigger.

I accessed my 3 plugs by going through the floor.. didnt pull the seat, just pulled up the carpet.

I did remove the top cover off the tranny, which was a bitch to put back on because I couldn't get the shifter to line up right... got it eventually

after talking to a shop they said they never remove the tranny cover, just do them on the truck. I was thinking this might only work with 2x4 trucks. Mine is 4x4 and the transfer case is kind of in the way.

If you have the top cover off you can dump fluid right in the top until it is up to the fill hole.

if you do not you can buy a hand pump $3 at a parts store and pump it right in there.

VR666 - while you were in there with the shifter...how hard would it be to get in and replace the bushings that crack up and make the truck shift sloppily? I don't want to get in there and then be screwed.

How do you go about removing carpet and everything? How do the floorpans and everything come up? I really need to do this...

saurian- you can replace the bushings without even pulling up the carpet, just take the shift boot off and take the 3 torq head screws out. Onces you pull the shifter stick out you will see the bushings. One on the bottom of the ball and one on the top.

if you want to replace the plugs you'll need to pull the carpet up which is done by taking the kick panels out and rocker panel pieces off. My carpet was kinda screwed up by the previous owner so I dont know if you'll have to mess with the 4x4 shifter or not (if you have one) and just throw the carpet up on the seat. Vacuum it first... otherwise bigtime mess on the seat.

the floor pan has several 13mm or so bolts holding it on. Then it is glued. Mine came off without heat, but if your is stuck you can heat up the edges with a hair dryer or heatgun.

Where are those freakin plugs? I couldn't find them. Where, in relation to the output shaft on the transmission, are the plugs? I felt up and there everywhere, and aside from lots of dried gunk all over, couldn't find anything. there was this weird foam thing...I felt all the way back from the shifter's area all the way back to the driveshaft, couldn't find a thing.

Are you just reaching from underneath? You wouldnt be able to feel them i dont think.I have my carpet and everything ripped out as we speak. I might attemp to fix my bushins myself if I had a clue.I could take some pics if you want. This is my second time pullin everything up in here and this time it only took about 10 mins.

Anyone got some pointers on fixing the shifter bushings?

A picture or two would be FANTASTIC.

Come to think of it..I did feel a few small bumps. How big are the drain plugs...I might have felt them. I just thought those bumps were dried up gunk..but..they were actually evenly spaced so..
