As a machanic, i can tell you this, and also take into concideration i was in the garage family shop when i was not only but 3 years old. (of course i didn't work on them then).....But if it runs good now, then theres no reason it won't always run good forever... What ruins engines are these things, not having a tad of collant lube in your system, people that allow radiators cores to get in the way they do no free flow, not having a good system that rids blowby, and not using the right grade oil for the proper climate.. Per say, my new running 302 town car engine with over 667k miles, that i use 20w 50 here, if i moved to detroit, i would change to 5w 30. Another thing is jackrabbit starts, this is murder on the thrust of your crank and puts force on those lower mains. Its this simple, if you dont frive like a wildman, and understand engines need proper cooling and oiling , that doesnt stay in the same place to long, the they will last as long as me and you.....Janet

I have a 1993 F-150 with a rebuilt 351 5.8L V8 EFI at 130,000 miles, and i am already having problems. When ever I start driving, and it starts to warm up the engine starts to miss out. Causing jerking. I went through and replace the plugs, wires, rotor, and distrubutor cap, but the problem is still there. Any help?

If you need answers for this, the best thing to do is use a seperate post. More people will see your question and be able to help you.

I had 175k on mine when I pulled it out, ran great, no smoke, and still had crosshatching on the walls.

66 F100.. 400 miles on a new 351w build. Not impressive, but it started as a worn out 89 block. I was hoping to just freshen it up, but found out it was a reman engine that was already bored .040 over and the mains were .040 under. It looked like they NEVER changed the oil.. ever! Interesting what they put in those reman engines... 2 different head castings and mixed rods from the 70's and 90's. Anyway, did a mild build starting from scratch... .060 over, picked up some E7 heads.. mild port job with Comp 252H cam. Not a hot rod, but runs great so far.

Have about 110 thousand on my 1990 with efi and an e4od. Runs good, but tbh i've hade to change some ancilleries, headers vibrated of, gaskets, and the timing gears ware shot wich i think is a bit wierd for that milage.
I used to have loads of old bmw's from about the same era that i built to drive to work as well as hillclimb and autocross events, and usually they made it at least twise as far before you ever had to think about opening the engine up.

Edit: Oh well, at least the parts are cheap for the windsor.

1994 F-150 4X4 with a 5.8W. 195,000 Kms. Running good but it's pretty tired as (I think) the first owner used it to tow a 5th wheel trailer and the 2nd owner (my dad) didn't do regular maintenance.

Compression test yesterday came up with Cyl 1 140, Cyl 2 130, Cyl 3 140, Cyl 4 140, Cyl 5 135, Cyl 6 145, Cyl 7 148, Cyl 8 125.

It uses a little bit of oil, about 1 litter between changes and it's down on power. A rebuild is in my future.

351W mileage

My 1969 351W has an estimated less than 200,000 miles, and is thoroughly worn out, burning and leaking rather a lot of oil.

I took it out of a beautiful Torino Hardtop many years ago. The Torino owner thought it was a good idea to let his 16 year old stepson borrow the car one Friday night, and surprisingly, he wrecked it!

I used the engine for years but these old carbureted engines just don't last like newer Fuel Injected ones do. Of course the oil is a lot better now too.

Bought my 1997 F250 Heavy Duty about a year ago with 247,000 miles... it now has about 249K and change... I knew the original owner.. oil changed every 3K miles religiously!.. The 351W runs great and no smoke or oil burning... My wife is always asking me why I love tinkering and polishing such a turd of a truck... I tell her because it is MY turd truck and I love it!
