anyone know the legalities of bolting a bench seat (with seatbelts) in the bed of a truck. i have a 1991 standard cab and was thinking about getting a shell and bolting a bench seat in the bed for my kids. i live in california. i wouldn't use it much, we have an E150 clubwagon for the long trips. it's easier to hit the yard sales on saturday with a truck
thanks
4wheel and offroad did an aritcle on a truck that they put a bed seat into and said they didnt encounter any problems since it had seatbelts on it and the cops were even more clueless about the laws on it than they were.
I don't know safetywise... Other than in a rollover (topper is lighter gauge usually) The seat would still be (presumably) bolted between the frame rails. I would be tempted to bolt it somehow TO the frame rails as the bed is attached with like 6-8 bolts as I recall.
Perhaps a piece of angle iron that runs the width of the bed that the seat and belts bolt to and then it bolts to the frame....Hmmm Interesting Question.
I think that the California Vehicle Code prohibits passengers riding in the bed of a truck unless it has a canopy cover. Even then, the seats would have to have seatbelts bolted to the bed .
There used to be a Subaru Brat if I remember right that had seats in the bed of the truck. I think it was something to get around import laws or tarrifs. I didn't see them for long... Seems very dangerous to me now, but then I have ridden in the back of a pickup before.
like i said, i would only use it around the neighborhood checking out local yard sales. i would never think of taking it on the highway with my kids in the back. that is just way to dangerous. i had a friend that used to have one of those car/truck thingies called a brat. it had a couple of seats in the back with seat belts. i was just wondering if we had an CHP's or law enforcements folks who might know. and BIGLES, yes i do think alot about my kids.
I figured you did. The reason I asked is because I am in the School Bus business. Also living in Alabama, almost weekly you see on the news where some one was thrown from the bed of a pickup or crushed from riding in the rear. Always bothers mewhen I see folks riding back there.
I would be sure I had a strong top and/or installed a good stout roll bar.
Big Les
as much as the kids would love it, i think most of you are right. too dangerous, even around the neighborhood. i just remember the days of my youth sitting in the back of trucks racing down the highway; it was fun back then but scares me now. thanks to all for "making me think it through".
copied response from the so. cal forum:
I learned this in drivers ed last year. You can have a seat in the bed if it has seatbelts. You Don't even have to have a shell. This is from the California Dmv websight:
(read C)
23116. (a) No person driving a pickup truck or a flatbed motortruck on a highway shall transport any person in or on the back of the truck.
(b) No person shall ride in or on the back of a truck or flatbed motortruck being driven on a highway.
(c) Subdivisions (a) and (b) do not apply if the person in the back of the truck is secured with a restraint system. The restraint system shall meet or exceed the federal motor vehicle safety standards published in Sections 571.207, 571.209, and 571.210 of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations. http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc23116.htm
