just brought my 6.9 from the shop for a compression test the lowest cylinder was 300 and the highest was350 also was leak down tested all cylinders passed.
the reason i took it to the shop in the first place is because it blows blue smoke on acceleration and ive used 3 quarts of oil this week andthere is no noticible leaks i thought for sure the rings were shot anyone have any thoughts on the excessive oil use?
People will tell you that your valve guides and seals will cause excessive oil use. But with the seals completly missing you would be lucky to use 1 qt every 1500 miles. The 6.9's have a cheap ring package from the factory. The compression rings are OK but if you look at the oil rings you will ask yourself how can they work being that thin.
If you burn 1qt every 500 miles then thats about average for a 6.9 with over 100k. If you start to burn 1qt every 200 then I would be looking into a overhaul.
Mine uses about 1qt every 750-800 miles, it is still pretty excessive.

In 1992 they upgraded the ring package for exhaust emissions purposes and the oil consumption, a problem that plagued the IDI engine from the beginning, went away (in most cases). I know it is irritating but the most practical thing to do is keep pouring it in. Also, since a diesel engine doesn't have a throttle valve in the intake system, there is hardly any vacuum in the intake tract. Therefore, valve guide seals (or the lack there of) are not much of a problem as they would be on a gasoline engine. Additionally, make sure you are using a good quality multi-grade oil. The viscosity improver will lessen the oil consumption some (as opposed to a straight grade oil).
